up2ng
I am going to change one of my front hubs, but I can't figure out which one needs it. I have all of the classic signs of a bad bearing (hum @40-60 Mph, car wanders a bit) and the noise goes away when making right turns. That would tell me that the right bearing is shot, correct? Shaking the wheel doesn't tell me much (both sides) as they aren't loose. BTW this is on a 1993 Deville w/ the JM4/4w ABS system Thanks, the car is on stands waiting
jndnaps
That's what mine did also. Turn to the right and the noise goes away, to the left and it gets louder. Sounds like a right side to me... Mine was, but I could also tell just buy the sound, Heard it on the right.. I have good ears
adallak
actually you never know which one is bad. here what i did with mine. I have losen bolts on the hub assembly and turned it some 120 degrees without taking off. and the noise pattern changed dramatically - before this procedure it became worse when i turned left, but after my intervention it became worse when I turned right! so, it is really hard to say. but at least it proved that particular hub was bad and I replaced it. up2ng
It was the right side! I removed the 3 bolts holding it in and the f-in thing fell out, not the whole thing just the inner bearing (it's not supposed to do that). Way scary. PS for those who need to do it in th e future you need- T55 Torx tip 34mm socket 80 FtLbs on 3 hub bolts 185 FtLbs on CV Spindle Nut It was quite easy to do, and the hub cost $177.00 at autozone (timken not valuecraft !) adallak
so, you were right in time... bearing falling apart is definitely a danger. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
rmac-etc
185 FtLbs on CV Spindle Nut Man, I got to get a manual ... I thought it was around 100 Ftlbs. Anyone know for sure ... If so I am running around on way loose wheels. (hey, BobD (should you see this), the flow of traffic south bound on 280 from 92 to Palo Alto was 80 to 95 this evening ... haven't seen a trooper giving a ticket for ages, go figure .. I made it from Emeryville, over the bay bridge through sf to Sunnyvale in 65 minutes, left at 6pm, I was amazed).

(145 N.m) If over tightened you could get premature bearing failure. Barry 2008 STS V82016 Colorado Z711970 Corvette LT-1 Coupe
