98deville
Just recently noticed a strong gas smell coming from the engine and found the gas coming out from the bottom filter of the evap/charcoal canister. Any idea why its doing that?
Cadillac Jim
It sounds like a cracked canister to me, probably road damage. I don't know the configuration of the EVAP canister in the 2003 DTS so someone that has that platform needs to chip in here. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. Ranger
The canister should only store gas vapors. Wonder how liquid gas is getting in there?

98deville
Anyone? Also coming to a stop the car feels as if it wants to accelerate more than stopping and sometimes it feels like it wants to die out?
Cadillac Jim
Variations in the idle can happen if the EVAP system is letting gas and/or air into the plenum. Have we looked at the OBD codes yet? Some do exist for the 1985 models. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. rockfangd
hmm interesting, havent head of this in awhile. Almost sounds like fuel vent is plugged and is causing fuel to back up into canister, and also you might consider looking at the fuel pressure regulator. This is probably most definately the cause of the elevated idle GM FAN FOREVER Nice, clean, luxury= fine automobile
Cadillac Jim
Does anyone have a 1985 owner's manual or FSM that tells how to get at the OBD codes? On my much older GM cars (1959, 1969, 1977, etc.) you shorted two pins of the pre-OBD connector and counted flashes of the CHECK ENGINE light. Instructions were in the Chilton's manuals, with most of the codes. After 1981 they had something that they called OBD. Cadillac Jim
Hopefully those codes will tell us what is not working for the EVAP, and possibly the fuel injection. Ranger
I think the '85 was still OFF & WARMER to get the DTC's.
Cadillac Jim
Not surprised at that. Where and how they are displayed, what format they are, etc. is a mystery to me. If they have a character display, they are probably a major subset of our familiar OBD I codes. But, I don't know. WarrenJ
I think the '85 was still OFF & WARMER to get the DTC's. Yep. It was OFF and WARMER on my 1983 Coupe. I *think* OFF and HI cleared the codes (don't bet your ranch on this one, though). I don't imagine the '85 was any different. Safari2000
The only code i got was 38 The code 38 is the MAT sensor, your cannister purge solenoid could be the issue.Restrictions in or leaking vacuum hoses.Check the 20A guage trans fuse, see if it is ok.Could also be short to ground in solenoid circuit. Safari2000
Your code 38 is the MAP sensor, could the problem be with the cannister purge solenoid?? Check all vacuum hoses for obstructions or leaks, check the GA Trans fuse(20 AMP) see if its ok. Could also be a short to ground in the solenoid circuit. Safari2000
Your code 38 is the MAP sensor. Check the cannister purge solenoid for functionality. Also check all Vacuum hoses for leaks or obstructions. Also could be a short to ground in the solenoid circuit. Also chk the GA trans fuse ( 20 Amp.) Safari2000
The code 38 is the MAT sensor, the purge solenoid could be the issue here. Also check all vacuum lines for leaks or blockage. Also check for short to ground on all wires in the solenoid circuit. Check that GA trans fuse is good.
