HELP!! Coolant Leak??

Bentham

Recommended Posts

I was on my way to school and I just happened to look down and noticed: Coolant Temp- 253. I said 'that's really high' so I run the red light, [no cars were coming] and just as I was pulling into park, I *think it went into limp mode.

I opened the hood and it was white smoke [not a whole lot] and coolant was sprayed. My coolant resevoir was also down [halfway in between 'FULL HOT' and 'FULL COLD' Please help!

Also said 'coolant temp hot' on IPC just as I was shutting the car off.

it wouldnt just be a new thermostat would it? would that make my coolant spray?

It could be caused by a thermostat that didn't open whether it was old or new. Also could be a ruptured hose, insufficient coolant level, belt, water pump, yadda, yadda, yadda. Start with the basics. You'll need top top up the coolant, 50/50 coolant to water, start it up and watch for leaks etc., while keeping an eye on the temp gauge.

thanks for the reply.. just a note - I was going about 80 mph on my way to school - 5 mins. late for class.

This isn't anything major though.. right? :(

Does the 4.9 NON-Northstar go into Limp Mode?

never heard of limp mode on 4.9. Just as the next guy said run the engine in Neutral with open hood and reve it with moving throttle bledes lever with hand - it will increase the pressure caused by water pump and you will see coolant fontaining fronm somewhere. Be careful.

k, checked under the hood.. the upper radiator hose was off.. SO, I put it back on thinking, it just fell off. The coolant level was 'FULL LOW' somehow, so I didn't bother to add any :\ start it up.., no problems. coolant was at 86 degrees i waited a min. still at 86 degrees. then I started driving it.. 90..92..,all the way up to 255 AGAIN! so I pull over called a tow truck. its sitting at a garage and will be looked at either today or tomorrow. Any ideas? Should I just have tried to add coolant and run it again? Thanks

If the upper hose was off you had very little coolant in the engine, the resivoir doesn't hold enough to fill the engine so it got hot again. I would fill the engine and rad with 50/50 and try it again.

I would drain and fill with fresh 50/50 mix and two tubes of bars leaks to make sure the coolant is ok. Do your fans turn on (they should when the temp gets some 225 degrees). Does your thermostat open? The upper radiator hose should be hot after 190 degrees when stat is open. Well, at least you found a leak. Do not rush to shop, you should be able to fix things yourself.

yea, when I turn the car off and open the hood.., that big fan behind the grill is turning. Not sure if the thermo is stuck closed. But now its in the hands of my german mechanic cause he was 4 miles away [free tow] I was 15 miles away. Plus, 'I'm not allowed to do car maintenance at the apt. complex I am living at' what BS. Thanks for everyones help thusfar. I'll keep you updated, any more suggestions?

on a side note; Firestone charged me 6 DOLLARS to INSTALL wipers on my car.
so you make $6 in six minutes which is $60/hour if you learn to install wipers yourself. think about it ;)

Who installed the thermostat? Are you sure it wasn't installed backwards (if that is possible)? If the thermostat failed or stuck closed, yeah, it sure would cause the coolant to spray as the car overheats and pressure builds. I don't understand why your radiator hose was off. Someone didn't tighten the clamp? That sure would cause a loss of coolant, steam and overheating.

All I did at Firestone was get my car inspected and tires changed. the thermostat has been in there for as long as I can remember. could it be the water pump?

-Eric

you said the thermostat was new (changed) and some work was done two days ago... I cannot understand anything. Could you tell us the story of your car?
