NEW FUEL RAILS

JUST HAD NEW FUEL RAIL INSTALLED ON 96 SLS ,TWO WEEKS AGO. WIFE DRIVES IT TO WORK THREE DAYS A WEEK. SHE KEPT SAYIN THAT SHE COULD SMELL SOMETHING BURNING COMING THROUGH THE AIR VENTS. INDICATED THAT IT WAS LIKE BURNING RUBBER. CHECKED OUT BUT COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING , THAT WAS SUSPICIOS. WENT ON TRIP THIS WEEKEND , AND I FINALLY SMELT WHAT SHE HAD BEEN TALKING ABOUT. UPON RETURNING HOME WITH ENGINE STILL HOT , I TRACED THE SMELL TO UNDERNEATH THE COVER FOR THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. UPON TAKING IT OFF THE PROBLEM WAS EVIDENT. THE OLD FUEL RAIL BEING NYLON OR WHAT EVER IT WAS , DID NOT TRANSMIT HEAT AS WELL AS THE STAINLESS ONE. THAT STAINLESS RAIL WAS SO HOT YOU WOULD BURN YOUR FINGER TO TOUCH IT. TWO OF THE INJECTOR WIRES WERE LAYING ONTHE RAIL AND THE PLASTIC TAPE WRAPPING THEM WAS BURNT TO THE RAIL. I MOVED EVERYTHING I COULD OUT OF THE WAY, BUT REMEMBER THE INSULATION ON THE COVER TENDS TO FORCE THINGS BACK DOWN ONTO RAIL. THE DEALER HAD PUT LOOM COVERS OVER THE PLUG WIRES , TO PROTECT THEM BUT ONE HAD ALREADY BEGUN TO MELT THE PLASTIC LOOM COVER / I TOOK MY DREMMEL TOOL TO THE INSULATION AND SHAVED SOME OF IT OFF. THEN WHEN I REPLACED COVER I BARELY TIGHTENED THE NUTS DOWN. SEEMS TO BE WORKING , BUT PLAN ON TAKING SECOND LOOK TO IMPROVE ON THIS ,

Franey, I'd stop messing with it, and transfer the liability back to dealer. Something is deffinatley wrong there, and I'd get it back to the dealer (with as much documentation, PICTURES! as possible) ASAP.

Post whatever comes of this, as it's a good heads up for everyone here with the year's models that this affects.

'93 STS.. opened, dropped, wide...fast.

Strange....but noted....

The injectors always have 12 volt + wired to them...

Its the PCM that pulses the ground to the injector. Pulse width modulation.

Your situation should have resulted in a direct short to ground, and a blown fuse. But with the plactic intake a circuit could be created.....

Hmmm....

I just took mine in today and had it done. I was quite surprised when I got home and checked it to see the black plastic "conduit" added to my plug wires (never had them before). I though, gee how nice of them. I'll be keeping a close watch on this. Thanks for the heads up.

BTW, I was in and out in about an hour and believe it or not they never tried to sell me anything. No trans service, no FPR, no injector cleaning, nothing. I was pleasantly surprised.

Well, I just got home from work. About 1 hour on the road so it was well heated up. The first thing I did when I got it in the garage was pop the hood and remove the cover. I am pleased to say that the fuel rail was nothing more than warm. No where near hot.

MINE got hot when ouside temp was 88 ti 92 , highspeed freeway driving, then stop for one hour on freeway and idled for miles while we worked way through work zone about ten miles from home. It melted the plastic electrical tape that was losely wraped around fuel injector wires. one was on rail pushed down by cover. It did not melt wireing insulation. everthing is now off of rail, and on a normal day the rail is not hot to touch just at upper end of warm.
