acel
The sunroof on my 1996 STS recently started to have a mind of it's own. If I push the button to open the roof up (retract), it opens part way. If I push the button again to open it further, it opens all the way, then shuts, then lifts to the up position. When I push the button to shut the roof from the up position, it closes, then begins to retract again. A push of the same button a second time WILL get the roof to stop at it's current position. It's like a limit switch is bad. I've got to be quick with the finger to get the roof to stop in the closed position. Other than this irritating problem....the roof is fine! Any thoughts, advice or help from you fine folks?
Ben
Assuming the roof is factory, it has a control computer that may have gone bad. This is not rare problem, but an expensive one to fix. If you have a service manual follow the fault tree, other than that I would say take everything down and see if you can see any problems.
Poobah
IF the sunroof mechanism in your '96 is the same as the one in my '94, the motor and timing mechanism is located in the headliner between the sun visors. It sounds like the timing has somehow gotten out of whack. The factory service manual will explain how to set the timing. It isn't hard to do once you get the upholstery trim cover removed so you can work on it. You will need a manual (or copies of the pertinent manual pages), though, because the timing sequence won't be easy to figure out without it. Happiness is owning a Cadillac with no codes. acel
Thanks for the advice. It is a factory sunroof and if the timing can get scewed up, that sounds like the problem. Any chance anyone out there has the steps I need to take to attempt to reset it (i.e. copies of the factory manual for this beast)? The only Cadillac shop manuals I still have are for my old 1979 Caddy (since sold).
Phillip
I was just about to look that up in my books, but I have them packed-up while I paint my office. I expect to be finished this weekend, so if you don't get a response try again in a few days and I will have the books unpacked again. Sorry about that. acel
Thanks Phillip and bigfoo. It's certainly not a matter of life and death at this point so I'll ping you in about a week. I appreciate the offer. Thanks very much.
