gardener24
My check engine soon light has come on and so I took it to my mechanic who can't find a code for it. Is this some kind of specialty check only Cadillac can perform? Occasionally it will shut off for 1 minute, but always comes back on
BodybyFisher
If your check engine light is on, it should be setting a code. Your Cadillac has an on board diagnostic computer, you can extract the codes yourself and you do not need a reader or mechanic to do so, go to this link and follow the directions for your year and model, have a pad and pencil ready and write down what you see, repeat it if you miss something, Mike Post the codes here and we can help http://www.caddyinfo.com/readingcodes.html Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

BodybyFisher
This is a lean condition on both banks, its pretty common. In other words its a vacuum leak that is affecting both banks. If this is a 2004, I believe you have a rubber part called an INTAKE PLENUM between the throttle body and the intake manifold. EGR gases settle on the bottom of the rubber plenum and deteriorate the rubber. Typically there is a crack or hole in the bottom of the plenum that begins to suck air. Check the plenum and replace if you find the leak. There is a test method where you spray something on the bottom of the plenum to see if the engine RPM changes but I am not sure what is sprayed, someone will post additional information. This is not an expensive part and not difficult to replace Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
Ranger
Use any flammable spray like Brakleen, Gumout, TB cleaner, even bug spray (Raid) would work for that matter.

cdgrinci
Some use an unlit propane torch with tubing attached to the end; either idle will smooth or rpm will rise if the propane gets within close proximity to the vacuum leak.
