AaronM
It was fun. I was driving the 4.9L 1992 STS on the highway and it was very rainy and windy. It was so rainy that I couldn't even see the road. We pulled off to the rest stop and let the storm past. And no, I did not do a WOT then, haha. Once the storm passed, I to the party we were going to. On the way back, the road had all dried up. I was going about 40-45 and then I punched it to merge onto the highway. It sure pulled nicely once it downshifted! It was pretty fast, but not incredible. Then we were on a back road and my dad told me to punch it at 25-30. I did and WHOA!! I felt the tires let loose and it pulled really hard! The Flowmaster was singing! I was shocked about how much power it had! It really pulls after it downshifts! It was fun. I might do the once a week WOT for the carbon. I don't want to make it a habbit or else I will find myself in some trouble! It sure was fun though! 18 Year Old Male Black 1992 STS 4.9L 90,XXX Miles Flowmaster 80 series muffler

You'll soon figure out (after you do it enough) what your favorite speed to punch it is. When you were doing 45 mph, it was probably too fast for the 4.9 for it to downshift into 1st, so it just hit 2nd gear, which is why the acceleration wasn't incredible. When you were going slower...25 or 30...that was slow enough where it could downshift into 1st and that's why you felt the blast of acceleration. The 4.9 isn't a high revver, so 35 mph is probably as fast as you can go for it to downshift into 1st when you let it loose. You'll soon figure that out though, and look for those opportunities to put a sheepish grin on your face. Running the engine hard and keeping it cleaned out is the best thing you can do for it. eldoman95
i love it when im on ashvalt road going about 25 mph and punch the crap out of the pedal and hit my nos at 4500! J/K
PAUL T
I have a 4.9 in my 92 Deville and it accelerates pretty good, but I really love to WOT the 94 Concours 4.6 Northstar. I do not think there is a comparison. Try to WOT a Northstar and you will definatly be hooked. My wife drove the 92 Deville, but when she started driving my 94 Concours, I can't get it back. Now she does not want any new car unless it has a Northstar. The northstar is very addictive.
bigfoo
haha.. but the 4.9 is fun to WOT from a dead stop.. northstar isn't as fun from a stop
JasonA
I think it depends on what Northstar you have. The LD8 version has close to 225 lb*ft of torque at 1000 rpm (according to the GMPowertrain graph)...and is about 275 at 2000 rpm. The 4.9 PEAKS at 275 lb*ft...and probably up around 3500 rpm or something. I don't know what the torque at 1000 rpm is, but I doubt it's much different from the LD8 Northstar. If you have the L37 Northstar, the torque off idle is less, and it doesn't build as fast. If you're looking for torque, the L37 is not your horse. Paul T: Northstar power IS addicting! Look at my signature -- Car & Driver said so themselves so it must be true! Jason(2001 STS, White Diamond) "When you turn your car on...does it return the favor?" msilva954
Definently with the 4.9........add some beautiful yet crappy Vogues into the equation and you can peel the tires at almost any speed through first and second gear.......and before you know it the big orange needle is past the 85limit on the dash.. AaronM
I am hoping to purchase a 1999 or 2000 STS in about 2 years for college driving. There are a few good universities that are only about 1/2 hour away. My parents said that if I stay home and drive back and forth, they will pay $7000 toward a newer car. So I will have to come up with the rest, which should be easy. Then I will be able to have the Northstar breathing through a Corsa 18 Year Old Male Black 1992 STS 4.9L 90,XXX Miles Flowmaster 80 series muffler

an01sts
Ah! The WOT syndrome. I've never tired a WOT off the line because it doesn't take much throttle to cook the tires. I'd say that the earliest that wot syndrome kicks in at about 12 to 25 mph. If you start woting at 40 or so, even the 5.0's fall by the wayside. That really pizzes off the guys who are trying to show off for the grilfreinds.
