quaid99
Just had front hub and ball joint on right side and when i turn steering wheel there is some clunking noise coming from that area, i tried to look at it but after raising car the noise wasnt there. Cant tell if its coming from lower control arm or link, i also looked at tie rod and rack, but they seem to be alright. Has anyone had this problem or can help???? Scotty
Explain it in more detail is it a single clunk or a rotating repetitive clunk?
quaid99
it only does it when car is moving and you are turning. it is not a repetitive clunk but it does clunk quite a bit, but not when you are driving straight Better get back to Mars
67coupedeville
That sounds like a Constant Velocity (CV) joint to me. Its the axle that goes between the transmission and the wheel hub. I would jack the car up again and check the boots on the CV joint and make sure they are all sealed up and not leaking any grease. You should also be able to grab the middle axle part and the outter (like I mean the peices of axle on each side of the boot) and twist it in opposite directions and see if there is any play in the axle. That's the best advice I can share . Spence

I don't want to jump to conclusions here but, if it did not make that noise before the hub bearing and ball joint it is possible to damage/dislodge the inside CV joint by allowing it to hang and pull out (just a thought)... Scotty
Here is the warning in the manual regarding axle care when doing hub bearings, etc. Mike
up2ng
I would lean towards a sway bar/stabilizer link vieng broken or loose. I just had this problem with the wifes car, it made a clunk when turning only. Does the xar dive/dip down when making a turn ?
an01sts
I don't know how far removed our cars are, but my 01 had defective control arms. I think that there was a GM Serive bulletion on them. Anyway, my noise was a groan--like a bushing. When I described the noise, the idits at the dealership said the power steering was fine. I told them that didn't whine like a p/s/p issue. Later, because I continued to btich about it, they overfilled the p/s as a cure. Just after the car went out of warrenty, and with my constant bitching about the problem, they finally replaced the control arms, and did them under warrenty. One thing it keep in mind is that when you replace ball joints or other components, it alters the way other peices interface with each other. If it isn't c/v, it could be a dry bushing--nothing in my front end can be lubricated, as far as greasing goes--or control arm/stabilizer bar. Keep bitching. I was a caddy tech. Trust me! As a caddy owner, you're supposed to keep bitching until it's right. It aint a chebby!
quaid99
After taking it to another garage they say it upper strut mount bushing?? Better get back to Mars
Regis
Could be..... look under the hood and pop off the black plastic cover off the top of the strut tower. Compare that to the other side. If they both look the same (centered) then I doubt it's the upper strut mount bushing but who knows. I had a similar problem not too long ago and my 94 was making a racket on slow left turns. Turned out to be a sticky position sensor (which cost nothing to fix), however I ended up needlessly replacing both upper strut mounts and bushings in the process. A rather expensive "free" fix but a good lesson.
