TDK
Well, I finally changed the coolant. I just couldn't stand the guilt anymore (learned too much from this site). It had maybe 60,000-miles on it since I got it. Good thing my boss changed all fluids, belts ($1,850 worth) etc before he turned it over to me. Hopefully it was preventative - not destructive maintenance on my part. Disconnected the lower rad hose and drained as much as possible and then gave it some air assist to purge some mo'. The Caddy rad drain petcock - is not a better idea (never could find it) through the covers etc. Did the hose thing since the Bars Gold was headed there anyway. One of those low, plastic storage boxes works nice to catch everything spilling out everywhere. Drained about 1.5 gallons of green out (clear green with very little residue). Refilled with 1.5 gallons of premixed 50/50 Prestone. News flash - its yellow. Now what's the next color - is this going the way ketchup did? The jugs specifically stated OK for ANY color coolant, all makes, all models and aluminum OK. I guess we'll see. I even fixed the air filter latch and cleaned up the engine compartment! Guilt-free Almighty, guilt-free at last! (apologies to MLK) Comments ? Add power to leave problems behind. Most braking is just - poor planning. Another reason is the recommended mix is 50% antifreeze and 50% distilled water; tap water contains unknown quantities of unknown minerals. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE ! growe3
I just read the Prestone information on their web site. This seems like a good product to use if you need some green or orange and can't get it. It is worth reading to now its limitations though. I.e., it will not extend the life of a car that has already been using the green coolant. I'll post a couple of the points below. . The new formula does not offer extended life properties when added to a conventional silicated coolant that requires attention every two years or 30,000 miles. It will offer the same protection as the vehicle’s original coolant without degrading its protection. . The new Prestone® 50/50 Prediluted All Makes All Models Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant formula should only be used to top off the cooling system. For a flush and fill, motorists should use the full concentrate formula offered by the brand to ensure the right mix of water and antifreeze concentrate. Not to mention the cost savings...why pay Prestone to pre-mix for you, and then greatly iflate the price? Only makes sense in an emergency, which is what it seems like this stuff is formulated for...Besides tremendous profit... '93 STS.. opened, dropped, wide...fast.
