1991 DeVille Tranny Trouble

Recommended Posts

I have a 1991 DeVille that I just recently purchased. About 4 weeks ago the transmission seemed to slip while trans.was in DRIVE, until you reached about 30 to 40mph. Then it seemed just fine. WRONG. Now, unless you have the trans. in 1st or 2nd gear you are not going anywhere, it just sounds like you are in neutral. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might try, or does this sound terminal. The car itself is absolutely gorgeous, rust free w/one tiny little dent in the trunk lid, so I just hate to send it to the scrap yard right now. (If nothing else it LOOKS GOOD just sitting in the driveway,HaHa) Thank-You for any advice and GOD BLESS.

Why would you send that car to the scrap yard? Get the tranny fixed

It sounds like what happened to my 91 Seville, it felt like it went into neutral about 40,

The SPRAG went bad and the tranny needed rebuilding, quite common on this tranny

Thank-You for your fast response, it's much appreciated. Would you also know if this repair is beyond the abilities of your (slightly above) average DIY'er? The main reason I mention the scrap yard is that I know of no one who's had a tranny rebuilt for under a couple of thousand dollars and if I remember right that's getting up there to about what the car is worth. Maybe I'm wrong OR maybe I should be looking at it from a different perspective. Thanks again.

Yes this is beyond the average DIYer. Although, I have rebuilt a couple of Turbo Hydromatic 350s and a TH400, with homemade tools. But this is a frontwheel drive tranny.

Yes it will cost about $2200, but the question is, can you get a car this good for $2200, I guess you need to look the whole car over, how is the engine, brake lines, AC, suspension?
