98 STS COOLANT LOSS

Recommended Posts

My car seem to have a leak or something I just don't understand but my Check Coolant Level message comes on about every 1000 miles. My car has 89000 miles and I just got it about 2 months ago and I don't think the coolant was every changed. Can any of you guys help me out thanks... ;);)

Make sure that the coolant in the reserviour is up to the line. Double and triple check your hoses to make sure that they don't have a leak. When you change your oil, you should only see dirty oil and nothing else in it. If you have something else, then you've got larger problems as your coolant is leaking into your engine. Not to scare you but those are some common occurances.

Do you know the history of the car?

I think I recall Guru saying that the Northstar is built such that a coolant leak will not get into the oil. Also look for leaks at the water pump cover and behind it at the pump seal. The pump seal is hard to see without a light and a mirror. Also when you shut down, open the hood and use your nose. You will often smell a coolant leak before you see it.

Look for wet spots on the ground then look straight up. Check hoses, radiator, surge tank, waterpump area. Check the coolant concentration. The coolant could use a little refreshing. Just DO NOT power flush it.

If you don't think the coolant was changed I would change it immediately at 89,000 miles and put in a full dose of the cooling supplement (very important). Dexcool is good for 5 years or 50K miles.

Mike,

I believe DexCool is good for 5 years/100,000 miles. At any rate, the time that the existing coolant has been in the car, it is due to be changed.
