it dies

Every once in a while, by that I mean twice or so in 1000 miles of driving over the past two weeks, my 93 deville will stall. It happens as I'm coasting toward a stop light, but before I hit the brakes...don't even realize it has stalled until I see the lights come on. It starts right back up, doesn't miss a lick, no spitting or sputtering. I've already changed the plugs...the originals were missing some of the platinum pads and some just looked more worn than others. Haven't done wires or anything else in that area...new fuel filter and air filter. Anyone else? It has plenty of power and everything works fine.

Sounds like the fuel pump might be going bad...Check the codes..My fuel pump went out over the course of two months. At first it would only die when decelerating...then things got worse. You can check the fuel pressure on the fuel rail with a fuel pressure gage...I would take a look at the fuel pressure regulator as well.

My past experience would lead me to check the crank sensors. Mine have failed twice causing the kind of stalling you mention.

I have a pressure gauge so I'll check the fuel pressure...I had forgotten about having that gauge, thanks for reminding me...

about the crank sensors...is that an expensive fix? Just want to know what to look out for. I was thinking about the fuel pump, and hoping it won't be that. I checked the codes...none so far showing up.

thanks guys

I'll keep posted

The 4.9 doesn't have a crank sensor. There is a cam sensor in the distributor that synchronises the injector firing sequence; a failure of this circuit would trigger a DTC.

When last was the throttle body cleaned? Also check the TPS, ISC and minimum air rate adjustments (lots of info in the archives).

An intermittent closed throttle switch problem (in the ISC motor assembly) could prevent the PCM from sensing a near stall condition and taking corrective measures.

Also, a poor ground connection may contribute to intermittent stalling. Remove and clean the various connections.

My 92 Deville did this and I also expected the fuel pump, but my car would fire but not start. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and it has been running great since then. It was about $100.00 and is a bear to change but can be done. It appears easy but the screws on mine came up from the bottom and were a pain to remove.
