ACDelco Northstar oil fliter

I noticed that when I picked up a filter a couple weeks ago. Was easier to figure out than the PF58 (I think) to PF61 change.

Walmart has ACDelco oil filters for a great price BTW. Cheaper than the Fram filters I think.

WARNING: I'm a total car newbie, don't be surprised if I ask a stupid question! Just trying to learn.

Fram filters are not very high quality. They are cheaply constructed (cardboard internal ends).

Do they break up internally and fall apart. Whenever I do an oil change they are always nice and heavy upon extraction of the old filter...

If you compare the construction of a Fram filter to an AC Delco, you'll see the difference. The Fram uses cardboard end caps where the AC Delco uses steel. ALso sometimes, the Fram filter pleats are poorly fastened to the cardboard end caps.

The one thing that Fram does that I like is they paint the lower portion of the filter with a testured paint which makes it easy to grip during installation.

Yes, the textured paint on the end is handy, however does the fram filter take a backseat to delco as far as filtering performance/capabilities? I change my oil as often as the monitor indicates and it's usually a dark brown(as opposed to black), maybe this fall I'll treat the Caddies to some fresh oil and ACDELCO filters. Thanx for the info

Cut open a Fram and an A/C Delco filter and see the difference. Somewhere on the internet is a comparison some guy made and rated all the filters. Fram did not rate well and has always had a bad rep. I think they where even sued years ago. Bobisthoilguy.com may have that comparison, but I'm not positive. Be advised, those guys over there are fanatics. I think they inject oil in their veins.

I wouldn't put a Fram oil filter on my car, even if it was free.

Yeah, I won't use a Fram either, I was just saying that the ACDelco filters at Walmart are cheaper than Fram :D

No oil filter is perfect, and I wouldn't rule out Fram these days, just based on past performance. There are some new design filters being made by Fram that might be just fine. I'm trying one of the new Fram "Xtended Guard" (XG0837) types on my DTS right now. I'll let you know what it looks like next year when I change my oil.

I take apart all of my oil filters and inspect them for debris type and defects after every oil change. This is how I know it takes about 12,000 miles of driving to break in a new Northstar engine. In fact I've used AC Delco oil filters exclusively on my 2008 DTS up till now, which currently has just over 20,000 miles on it. One AC Delco filter, examined at 3727 miles, did not have the internal media completely glued to the metal end caps inside, creating an opening through which unfiltered oil could pass back into the engine. The rest of the media still caught debris, so it worked to some extent even with this defect.

During break in of this engine, I replaced oil filters at 1800 miles, and 3727 miles without changing the oil, then the first oil and filter change at 5050 miles. I did not reset the OLM at that time and it was down to 25% left when I changed oil and filter for the second time at 12,591 miles. When I took apart the filter at this second oil change, it was the first one that was "clean" inside. That means there were no visible metallic particles or pieces of red/orange/blue silicone sealer on the paper element.

I now follow the OLM or the 1 year period between oil changes, which for me ends up being 12 months per oil change. This last change at 20,019 miles was extremely clean with no visible particles of metal or silicone sealer. Only one AC filter was found to be defective out of 4.

Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed.

Wal-Mart sold products sometimes are made cheaper to fit into their corporate price demands. I wonder if AC Delco filters sold at Wal Mart are the same as the AC Delco oil filters sold at GM dealerships?

I've wondered the same thing myself.

Just to be clear, the AC Delco filters that I used were not purchased at WalMart, nor at a dealership, but at places like AZone & Advanced.

Delco was recalling brake pads 4 years ago for poor quality...made in china. Why not mfg. oil filters in china? Nobody was really interested in opening up a filter until somewhat recently to check out the internals.

Well tomorrow I shall purchase 2 PF61E filters(one for each car) they are a buck cheaper than the fram filters I've been buying for years, Ranger this may pertain to you but some times the local canadian tire offers a free fram oil filter with the purchase of a jug o castrol GTX,which is what I use. So if I buy 2 jugs and the wife buys 2 jugs we've got 4 frams in stock

Question: Have they changed the design of the filters inside? I used to buy the AC Delco filters in Sweden, but last winter I ordered a bunch of them from Rockauto. The new ones have a plastic insert supporting the filtering paper, and the old ones had a metal insert. How do your's look? Just look into the filter - do you see a metal tube with many holes in it, or do you see a plastic cage?

All of the filters that I took apart had metal tubes in the middle. The last filter was examined on 6/24/2010.

If that's an offer, thank you, but I'll pass. :)
