Don't be surprised if they refuse to do the job, because the BOOK calls for 7.5 and you are only putting in 5, whether or not its ok is not pertinent, in their minds they risk liability by doing so...

While THEY may not change it an put in 5 quarts, using only 5 quarts is FINE, no problem. The guru explained to us that the additional oil was in there so that the engine would not suck air in HIGH G turns and that it could run on 5 quarts. As a matter of fact, it has been said that with NSs that use oil, just wait until the OIL LOW light comes on, at that point its two quarts low.

Just dont do any 1 G turns on the way home...that is if they allow you to put in 5 and leave

our new camry uses 0w-20 which is syn oil. the shop will do a syn change for $50. or dino oil for $10. mobil 1 is $21/jug at sprawlmart but they do not have 0w-20 in jugs. i will do the oil changes on both our cars myself.

now being have worked for companies that do oil chaanges, and I do believe there was a slight issue with the northstar losing prime due to air intrusion, Maybe I have this wrong , but to me it is a chance not worth taking. I agree with the other member on bringing the other 3 wuarts of oil with you.

See my 96 takes just over 8 quarts to fill to the full mark, Almost 8.25 quarts, so 5 quarts to me is a big difference but it may not be for someone else

This is out of the 96 factory service manual

  • Oil Capacity with Filter

--

7.5 Quarts

  • Without Filter

--

7 Quarts

As I said, I will trust the designer AL CLINE (the guru) who said 5 QUARTS is fine, we are talking about DRIVING HOME from the local JIFFY LUBE not doing donuts on a skidpad folks.... 2 quarts low brings you to 5.5 quarts. NEVER fill the oil to the TOP of the dipstick, case half leaks are sure to follow, is another thing he used to say

Definately not, put 7 quarts in plus a 1/2 for the filter, mark the location on the dip stick, and that is your level. Also acceptible is keeping it in the OK area on the dip stick indicator

Putting too much oil in will exasperate a case half leak

7,5 quarters is ok. That will not cause the level to hit the top of the dip stick with a cold engine though. What people fail to notice is that the oil level should be checked with a hot engine. Adding oil to the "full" mark when the engine is cold will be too much oil on the other hand.

But don't panic if the oil level is at the lower part of the stick, as mentioned earlier, there is a "oil low" (or something like that) warning.

8,25 quarters is way too much, never ever overfill the engine because you'll risk to get the half-case oil leak.

Just put in the 7,5 quarters as the manual states. 5 at Jiffy Lube and the other 2-2,5 when you're home.

Not taking any chances at all. Remember, the CHECK OIL LEVEL message does not even appear until you are 2 qts low. I remember the Guru saying that they would run the test engines sometimes with as little a 3-4 qts in them.

Topping it off to the full mark will just increase the oil consumption as it will burn off the excess. Trying to keep it topped up the the full mark is an exercise in futility.
