BodybyFisher
I don't believe there is any other engine that you can use, that would make sense. Head gaskets are not usually a problem on this engine, the cylinder sleeve o-rings are. Ranger
Properly maintained, the 4.9 is about as reliable and durable as they come. Why mess with success?

BodybyFisher
Replacing it with a 4.1 or 4.5 would be foolish, they are predecessors to the 4.9 and in my opinion and not to offend anyone inferior. KHE
Does the engine turn over and run? You might not need to replace the engine at all. Kevin '93 Fleetwood Brougham '05 Deville '04 Deville 2013 Silverado Z71

You might not need to replace the engine at all. yes the engine runs but i can smell the antifreeze and can see the slight white exhaust smoke from the exhaust, so i pretty well know it is the head gasket. i know a guy that spent 3000 on the rebuild and he has a 4.5 liter , i was wondering if that would swap with mine without too much effort or is the 4.9 the only fit , noone has really answered that question. Bruce Nunnally
Technically the 4.5L will fit. The issue may be with the engine computer / electronics and tie to the dash. Once Cadillac went to the 4.9L they replaced the 4.5L. But since both are OBD I you may find that it is plug and play. However, you may not. Ranger
NO BODY swaps into a 4.1. People want to know what they can replace them with.
Bruce Nunnally
The "L26" 4.9L started in 1991 and ran until 1995 in some non-sport models. It was used across the line in Sevilles, Devilles, and Eldorados in 1991 and 1992, and in base models in 1993-1995. Bruce Nunnally
I would plan to use the original computer that came with the car, but it should run the 'new' 4.9L. I am sure you will run into something(s) that changed, but your engine swapper should handle.
