I was afraid to look at this thread, :lol:

I wonder how he first decided to do this 'trick'....UM, I think Ill change my belt with the car running? Maybe his battery was dead? and he couldnt turn it off?, amazing what some people will try

My Uncle used to be a VW mechanic.

Some of the older... (kinda wore out)... VW's were real hard to start if you shut them off.

I have seen him do this a couple of times.

"I" didn't want to try it....:D :D :D

I will have to watch it again to see if he had all of his fingers. My luck the screw driver would fly out and embed itself in my chest.

A friend (who is pretty good with a wrench and a former air-cooled VW owner) in Rockwall County, TX sent me that video several months ago. I called him and asked if he knew where we could find a running VW; I wanted to practice that procedure!!

It seems like that procedure (in addition to being hazardous to one's fingers...) might break the cords in the belt.

I like wrenches too much to short cut the process like this, laugh.gif

In actuality, the new belt should not fit, if the tension was adjusted as the old belt got old.
