98eldo32v
well, I know what i have to do with my eldorado. yet, when i've been checking around for cylinder heads on these motors the prices are pretty high. With so many of these motors as "cores" one would think the heads may be cheaper. This brings me to my question. Even though the headgasket may go, does it "normally" take the head with it? Do these heads have a history of warping?
CarlaValentine
Typically the heads will only warp if the car has been overheated severely.
98eldo32v
Typically the heads will only warp if the car has been overheated severely. well, i still plan to check them for flatness. I was wondering if the heads warped easily as well. Thanks
Texas Jim
I have heard of VERY LITTLE trouble with the heads. That would not be one of my major concerns.

BodybyFisher
Warping has not been an issue, I will have mine checked for flatness however also when I have them cleaned up Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
KHE
The engine is designed to operate for 50 miles with no coolant. There is rarely if ever an issue with the heads. This definitely doesn't mean you should ever try to drive with no coolant, unless you have no other option. The Northstar was created with a "limp home" mode, where if the coolant should happen to run out and the engine starts to overheat, 4 alternating fuel injectors will stop firing, leaving those 4 cylinders to pump air to help cool the engine. I think it's a brilliant engineering idea myself.
BodybyFisher
When the Northstar was introduced, it was advertised on TV commercials, just as that, the NORTHSTAR that would always get you home, it can go 50 miles with total coolant loss... I am going through a bunch of old VHS tapes, digitizing family scenes I have found tapes that have 1990 through 1995 tv commercials, between recordings of shows, I have been keeping my fingers crossed to find a NORTHSTAR commercial.....that would be cool to digitize... That would be very cool to digitize! I've seen many commercials for Cadillac, but none for the Northstar. My Northstar has always gotten me home. As many times as I've had trouble with my car, it has never left me stranded. I haven't ever run it out of coolant to test that idea, and I don't ever plan on it, but I'm sure it would still get me home.

You can get whole motors cheaper than rebuilt heads.....
