Ok. so far you guys have been brillant with the help on my questions. yet, may this one might stomp you because it has stomped me. I'm new to this eldorado thing, but i learn fast.

I had the key turn "ON", and I was watching two messages scroll across the display on the instrument cluster. I have no clue what to do about this first one. The message read "service power steering system". the second message was"change engine oil". the second message seems self explanatory, but I have no clue where to even start with the first. The check engine light was on, but I didn't have my scan tool to scan the codes. Any help ladies and gentlemen will be appreciated. Thanks again

You dont need a scan tool with a Cadillac. It has an on board diagnostic system.

Go to this link and follow the directions for your year, and post the codes here

http://www.caddyinfo.com/readingcodes.html

That will help us know what the first message is caused by. The second message means that your oil life monitor was not set the last time the oil was changed. You will find how to reset it in your owners manual, do you have one? If you have an INFORMATION button on your dash, you push that button till your OIL LIFE comes up, then press and hold RESET.... on some cars..

If you haven't already, check your power steering fluid. I'm not sure that it would display a message if it's low, but it's worth checking anyway.

when I saw the power steering system message, the first thing I did was check the fliud. Yet, it seemed full. In reality, it seemed overfilled to me......

There should be a dipstick attached to the cap. It normally has 2 marks on it, one says "full hot" and the other "full cold". If the car is cold, it should be on the full cold mark, if it's hot then on the full hot mark. If it doesn't have 2 marks (I've only met one car that didn't) it should at least still have something on it to tell you where the level should be.

I don't need the scan tool to pull codes...? SWWWEEET.

The car has some minor issues though. I'm told it needs headgaskets, but I was ready to deal with that. I plan to use the Northstar Performance kit.

The Bose stereo system, I'm baffled. It seems all the speakers will need replacing. The front door speakers are missing. I have the grilles, no speakers. The rear speakers, one the amplifiers is missing on the right rear, and the left one "seemed" normal.

Where do I get replacements for these?

You call Northstar headgasket issue minor? :) It is not.

If it's low, then you most likely have a leak somewhere. Power steering fluid doesn't just vanish unless there is a leak. Does the steering act funny at all? If the pump is starting to go it would normally make a whining sound when you turn the wheel, and it may steer harder than normal.

You should try to clear the message from the display and see if it comes back or not. To do this, you would push the INFORMATION button on the dash panel until the power steering message comes up, then press and hold the RESET button. Same procedure for resetting the oil life monitor as described above. If there is a problem with the power steering system, the message will come back.

You should definitely check your codes though and post them. They often hold answers that you won't find any other way.

well, in reality it's not a minor issue. Yet, unfortunately a lot of them need the gaskets done. I've come to realize this is an amazing motor, but wasn't engineered 100%. I hate to see so many sevilles, devilles, and eldorado's fall to the way side because of the cost of the repair. I can do mine myself. I'm fortunate enough to be that lucky. I can't imagine all of those cars/motors sitting around over headgaskets, but I see so many of them, it's a shame..... :wipetears

Wow! Bose anything normally isn't cheap, but they have some really good prices on there. I think I know where I might get my replacements for my rears, assuming they still have them when I get around to buying them....(I have a blown amp/speaker)

thanks alot. when I extract the codes, I will post them. I know the "guru's" here will guide me. I plan to fix this car to it's original state, nothing more. I wanted the "9" motor, yet ended up with a "y". I'd love to get 300hp/ 300ft lbs of torque, but I guess I can't have it all.....

by the way, my eldorado has this brownish redish interior that I don't see on too many eldorados. what" the 2 digit code for that. Example 64I. Thanks

tried to use the link. got me to the page, clicked on speakers and got the dreaded "404 message"

Oh sorry, it originally gave me a long list of replacement BOSE Cadillac speakers, but I guess it was a ruse. I do believe you can get replacements,

For your info, this is a terrific used car parts database www.car-parts.com
