Well after having the dust plate off and noticing the sound increase in decibels I think I have located the problem.

All 4 of the TC nuts and I used a snake camera to inspect the bell housing and it looked clear of any sparkly metal filings.

So at this point I'm assuming the torque converter is biting the dust.

At this point I'll keep the old girl until I can get some time to have "fun" and pull the tranny and figure this all out once and for all...

Explain what you mean. All 4 of the TC bolts are bad?

Did you say that you changed this engine?

I'm sorry sometimes I think faster than I type  . All the TC bolts are tight is what I intended to say.

And yes, the engine was swapped out about 2 years ago.

I'm just going by the fact that once I removed that dust cover that the noise got much louder and the revolutions seemed to match the sound (There was a white mark of spray paint on the TC and every time it would come around it would knock). I rotated the crank 360 degrees and visually inspected the TC and flywheel for damage and they seemed fine from what I could see.

Thanks for the link! I'll check it out again when I go see my parents. I didn't notice any cracks in the plate. I only checked them with an open end but I guess I'll have to loosen off the exhaust so I can get a torque wrench in there and check it out a little better this time.

Well I figured I'd update you all on this problem I've been having. I got under the car and was unable to tighten or even back the TC bolts off. So stumped as I was I took it to my friend's dad's tranny shop and he had found that one bolt was loose but was really tight and had to use a snipe on a breaker bar to get it off. He pointed out that all the bolts were not to his satisfaction after being reused so he put some new ones in, torqued them to spec, then sent me on my way.

Apparently he has done a lot of work with these cars and said that this was the first one he'd seen with this problem and that they are actually very tough drive-trains when driven and maintained properly.

But long story finally short, I now have a smooth running Caddy again. Next step is a new P/S pump and she'll be silent again until I throw the Borla's on her this summer :D

Thanks again for all the time that you all have taken to read this and the wisdom that was shared.

Haha yeah I was ready to pitch the thing, but I guess it goes to show that some things can be not as bad as they appear, or in this case sound.

I have no clue why or how it caused a bit of a sporadic idle, but it is back to normal now  ...

And yes I picked up some new oil and filters and will swap this 120hp S-10 (that feels as if it has a 0-60 time of 5 minutes) for her tomorrow after I change the oil again. I guess the engine will be nice a clean now though haha

I just listened to your sound bite.

I have a 93 Sedan Deville and about a month ago it started making the same sound. It is exactly like my car sound.

I do not want to get rid of the car. If anyone has ideas, keep them comming.

thanks

I don't understand what corrected the problem?

thanks

His torque converter to flywheel bolts were loose, he replaced the bolts and tightened them to spec

I understand. Interesting. Can't say I would have ever thought to check that.

thanks

Yeah I never thought about it either. What I did was lifted the car and supported it on stands, then pulled the dust cover off the flywheel and started it up to watch and listen to the TC and FW. My TC had a spray paint mark on it and every rotation it would knock.

When I took it in, I was told that the bolts are starting to back off and that it is best to replace them as the threads could be stretched. Also, make sure you apply lock-tight to the threads first, but first confirm this is the problem you are having.
