Does anyone have access to the shift solenoid replacement procedure and scan with the check ball location in the lower control valve assembly?

I lost first gear last night, it started in second

The shifts have been harsh over the last month or so and I was going to change the fluid, but I guess it was the shift solenoids going bad

Thanks in advance for any info, Mike

I just checked for codes, and there are none

Do the shift solenoids ALWAYS set a code?

As I noted, last night I lost 1st gear and started in second. Once I got above a certain speed all seemed fine, fluid level and smell ok

As I left one light, I had a bunch of cars behind me, and I had to take off harder, I got a 'bang', and from that point she has been fine, shifting from first just fine, but I have not pushed it at all

If it started working again, would a code that was set by a shift sensor go away?, or be in there as history?

Next time it happens, Ill check the codes immediately

Mike,

If it set any codes, it should still be in HISTORY.

Stop by a parts store and they can pull the codes for you...and maybe clear them at the same time.

It could be that the 1-2 solenoid was somehow stuck. That would account for the BANG you felt.

I know it is probably a different trans...but on my '06 Chevy van, with the 4.3 V6...I can put the shift lever in "2" and it will start in 2nd..."UNLESS" I crowd it pretty good. At that point it will downshift back to 1st.

What trans is in the Monte Carlo?

It is Front Wheel Drive isn't it?

On the GM truck boards that I am on...a lot of the guys replace the solenoids in the truck, with 'vette solenoids for better shifting.

It seems to be a pretty simple matter to do them on the trucks...but they are rear wheel drive.

I am considering doing it to my van. Just because. :D:D

Jim, I can pull codes with my handheld and with my laptop. I am thinking that if a code was set that after a certain amount of normal starts it goes away.

I dont think its going to be too difficult to change the two solenoids, I just need to make sure the check balls are back where they belong. I would like to see it set a code however before I go ahead and change anything

Thanks, I think Ill stop by a Chevy board to see if they are having any problems with the solenoids, its got 80K on it

Mike,

I apoligize....I meant SHIFT SERVO ... not solenoids.

Had a brain freeze and typed one thing while I was thinking of a different thing.

Thats what happens when you are trying to do too many things at one time.

I meant 'vette shift servos...not 'vette solenoids.

Sorry about the confusion.

Well I got my service manual today and I am very upset to see that the shift solenoids on this Chevy are located in the SIDE PAN!!!

That sucks.

Does that mean that you have to drop the tranny to replace them?

I sure hope not.

It sure does. I have not gotten a code yet. The shift sensors will set numerous codes. I HOPE its a shift sensor, and not somethng more serious regarding mechanical items
