Bruce Nunnally
http://blogs.insideline.com/straightline/2...n55-engine.html Details on BMW's new N55 engine have been out since last summer, but we haven't discussed them much here beyond telling you that it's the best of the 3 engines (2 for us) that BMW will offer in the 2010 BMW 5 Series GT. But this isn't just a turbocharged inline-6 the company has made specially for misshapen crossovers. Rather, this engine will replace the current twin-turbocharged inline-6 we know as the N54. BMW 3L I6 turbo goes from twin-turbo to single-turbo and adds full VVT (BMW calls their variable valve tech Vanos). Output still around 300hp, although the BMW 335i manages to be quicker than a CTS DI 3.6L with a similar 304 hp due to lighter weight and sprint gearing. Cadillac says the upcoming ATS will be the 3-series competitor.
