low oil pressure

96 sts. 121k miles. oil light flickered today at idle. went off when i revved higher. never seen that before. drove 20 miles to store. came out, started car, low oil pressure. moved 100 ft to better spot. shut off motor. oil level fine. last year, my oil cooler line blew off at stop light. engine was idling. no high rpm. towed home. fixed line, car ran fine. i let it idle today for a minute. i can hear a slight rattle on the top end. what to do next? lets assume oil pickup is ok in pan. double check torque on balancer bolt? how do you inspect oil pump after removing it? how does a shop proceed?

The general consensus here, which has been discussed several times, is to put in a little thicker oil. I'd say try a straight weight HD 30 first, and if that doesn't do the trick, maybe a 10W-40, finally, and the one that gives most people relief, is the HD 15W-40 diesel truck oil.

If you want to stay with 10W-30 try Citgo Superguard Ultralife, followed Mobil1 High Mileage, they are the thickest 10W-30s around. ( Oh, also Castrol Syntec (made in Germany) 0W-30)).

In the "exotic oils" class, Motul, Shell Helix, Petro Canada Supreme, Kendall GT1 Synthetic, Amsoil ALF, Elf Excellium LDX...all in 5W-40 are on the thick side of auto rated (not diesel) motor oils.

Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed.

Yes, there is a variation depending on the manufacturer and the base stocks used. Made In America can probably add to his topic with more recent data, mine is about 3 years old.

And while I'm at it, the thinnest 10W-30s are Havoline Synthetic, Castrol Syntec (not made in Germany), Supertech (supplied by Exxon/Mobil), Petro Canada Supreme, just to name a few. A lot of 10W30's can have base numbers THINNER than popular 5W-30s. For example, 10W-30 Castrol Syntec is actually thinner than Mobil Clean 7500 in 5W-30! (and a lot more)

Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed.
