JimD
One reasonable start point is to display any Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Here's how; http://www.caddyinfo.com/readingcodes.html Report the codes back to this forum in this thread. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE ! SPRAYED ELECTRICAL CLEANER ON ROUND CONNECTOR AND WHERE WIRES GO INTO TRANS. AND IT WORKED FOR A SECOND . WHERE DO THE WIRES GO ONCE THEY ENTER TRANS. CAN WE TAKE OFF SIDE COVER TO GET TO THEM. OR WHICH COLOR WIRES
JimD
....WE CLEARED THEM AND RAN IT ON JACK STANDSPlease turn off your CAPS LOCK. I'm surprised you did not report a double handfull of codes after "RAN IT ON JACK STANDS". Running the engine with the car in gear and front wheels off the ground has to the single most confusing situation for the traction control system. Traction control would be applying the brakes and the noise would be obvious. SPRAYED ELECTRICAL CLEANER ON ROUND CONNECTOR AND WHERE WIRES GO INTO TRANS. AND IT WORKED FOR A SECOND .Did you open the connector and spray the contact pins and sockets? Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE ! JimD
....i did not spray them.So you basically just washed the exterior shell of the connector. Get some contact cleaner on the pins and sockets; it might help.....do u know how far the wires go in to the tranny and if i can get to themThere are many solenoids and sensors throughout the transmission. The only way to access all of the parts and pieces is with the transmission on the bench. The codes you reported point to several different problem areas. P0502 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit Low Input The VSS sensor is located on top of the RH drive axle extention. Easy enough to check for a loose or dirty connector. And the sensor is not an expensive part. P0719 - Brake Switch Circuit Low Input This might indicate a brake pedal switch that is not operating properly or is not installed/adjusted properly. Does your cruise control work as expected? P0741 - TCC System Stuck Off Cleaning the pins and sockets in the transmission connector might fix this code. No guarantees on that one. Jim Drive your car. denthepen
The VSS circuitry has been butchered...? you mean that they cut a wire?...
JimD
I do not know what has been done or where, but in your words it "started day after after market radio install...". Connect the dots and the path leads right to the radio. The VSS signal is used by many modules in the vehicle and the radio is one of those. Have them look for a damaged/cut dark green wire. Insulation damage allowing the VSS to touch a chassis ground point would kill the signal. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE ! Texas Jim
Ok, so my mechanic changed the sensor yesterday morning and so far so good, the car runs really smooth... yeah! It's my first Caddy and i'm probably a little nervous and anxious... I'm glad it was only the VSS sensor.. Very odd that it went out at the same time the aftermarket radio was installed. Thanks for reporting back on the fix for your problem.
BodybyFisher
The PCM utilizes the VSS in the event that the ISS or Input Speed Sensor becomes defective. When my ISS sensor when bad, my transmission shifted rough. But the VSS is only used for your speedometer, I believe. It is not relied on for shifting or line pressure unless the ISS is out of order. Why your transmission was shifting poorly with a bad VSS sensor is indictive to me that you MAY have an ISS speed sensor that is wacky. Do me a favor and pull your codes and look to see if you have an ISS code like P0715, P0716 or P0717 current or history. JimD
....But the VSS is only used for your speedometer, I believe. Not so for the models in question, Mike. Cruise control and the radio and the PCM also receive the VSS signal. If/when the PCM detects a difference between what the ISS is reporting and what the VSS is reporting (considering gear selected, engine RPM and other instantaneous variables), the PCM will put the transmission in high pressure mode for protection. High pressure mode equals firm shifts. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE !
BodybyFisher
Interesting, I am pretty sure that the 96 does not work that way, I have to get my manual working again, its annoying not to have it Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
