Need imput from Eldorado owners

Recommended Posts

I have a 1998 Eldorado coupe, with 48,000 miles. My GM used car certified warranty expires 6/30/04 and I am wondering what should have been covered "under warranty" repairs did you experience after the warranty expired. What should I have checked out right now. I am/have experienced the common problems, strut/stabilizer/sway bar?? clunks, rear sail panels detaching, inner door panels pulling loose all of which I have had repaired at different times. I've had front tires replaced and 4 way wheel alignment at last inspection several months back. I recently have noticed only when going at higher speeds (over 70) when turning the steering wheel to the right I hear a 1 second interval rhythmic rub/shutter/vibration. This is new, it did not occur after the tires/alignment.

I have had 4 seperate "serv stability sys" in the past, all repairs have replaced a steering wheel sensor. Also my front end seems to feel like it bottoms out over bumps/holes...no current codes on DIC, but if struts will be a problem what can I tell the dealer to MAKE them look at them and possibly replace them now. What other big ticket repairs/problems usually occurs after this point? Thanks for any imput.

98EldoCoupe,

I'm not too sure about the "routine problems" you have had repaired. I've had nothing like any of your list (or most of the rest of the site's posts) for the last 90,000 or so - after I got it at 82,000. Maybe I just miss a lot of stuff?

Also not certain what a "sail panel" is, but if it sailed off the car, then maybe that's what GM intended.. (sorry about being a smart a**) ;)

I really hoped someone would be able to state how to determine when the stuts are worn. Is there an actual test or is this just something subjective like "it just needs 'em" - so cough up the money? I suspect that the ride gets progressivly choppy, but you don't notice - until comparing it with another similar vehicle. Is it even feasible to replace struts, links, etc and get back the new car ride?

I'd like to know how anyone has convinced a Dealer to replace struts on warranty (aside from a completely broken unit, dangling off the car).

Really, good luck on resolving your pre-expiration (car warrenty) concerns... :)

Add power to leave problems behind. Most braking is just - poor planning.

Hi the "sail panels" are the rear triangular trim panels, inside rear, that fit against the roof and the sides of the back inner window. If you look at your car from the outside, looking into the back window, you may notice that the sides detach and you can see the wires traveling along the edge of the window. When loose these panels get warped, look bad, and in my car they do tend to make interior noise as you go over bumps and things..at least in my car!

My '97 Touring Coupe went off extended warranty about a year and a half ago. Just prior to that, the I was experiencing the half case drip and had that repaired under warranty. No problems since then with dripping oil. I occasionally peek under the car to see if it is starting up again but it is always bone dry. Does anyone have any knowledge as to whether the case half fix is permanent, or should I expect it to start leaking again at some point?

No other real problems to speak of though. No sail panel detachments, but my door panels did detach at the lower edge. Fixed it myself a year ago with 3M automotive trim tape. Still holding up. Needed to have a cam cover gasket replaced last year, but that's about it. Overall, this has been and continues to be a great car.
