fuel pressure regulator

Hey guys...

For the last few months now my 99 STS has had a hard time starting hot. If I drove it for a while and stopped for 10-15 min it would start and stall immediately afterwards (once in a while not everytime) I meant to buy a fuel pressure regulator for a while now but when I went to the parts place they told me there are 2 kinds for this year caddy. My question is how do I figure out which one I have so I can order it. Today when I came out of a store and I couldn't get the car to idle at all. I had to 2 foot it home where it all started working normal again...but I really have to replace it. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Matt

There are two designs, the first if for the nylon fuel rail. The second updated design is for the stainless steel fuel rail.

There was a recall from GM for the original fuel rail, I think you should have the stainless fuel rail. If you take off the beauty cover you should be able to see which one you have.

WARNING: I'm a total car newbie, don't be surprised if I ask a stupid question! Just trying to learn.

Cheers!

The pressure regulator you want is

ACDelco #2171598

GM #89017530

They are the same item.

If you took your VIN to a Cadillac parts counter, they would sell you GM #89017530, or the latest vendor part # iteration.

Some Northstar engines, 1997 and earlier, had fuel line leakage problems and the fix was to replace the nylon fuel rail with a stainless steel fuel rail and that change required a different fuel pressure regulator. None of this applies to 1998+ vehicles.

However, in the aftermarket parts catalog world, the suppliers 'assumed' the above change applies to all Northstar engines which is not true. Hence, the confusion.

Good luck....

It should not be that hard to tell the difference between Nylon and Stainless. If it is shiny it is Stainless, if it is dark brown it is Nylon. If you do not have a Stainless fuel rail you need to check to see if you car was in the recall, if so have the stainless rail put on.
