valve cover job on 97 DTS gone awry

Recommended Posts

I couldn't get a decent enough picture to show the ground wire on my car. If you can get a picture of the ground wire on the car you're working on, it might be helpful.

Now that you have replaced the battery, can you check the codes once more?

Well guys... I knew it was something boneheaded...

I checked that 2 wire lead by the power steering pump... the way it was laying, looked like it was connected under the upper intake... turned out... it was not. the other end of the wire had fallen back under and behind... so I never even saw it, till that suggestion hit.

plugged it in... it purrs like a kitten.

I'd like to think I would have noticed that on my own... but with this head cold, I am forgetting my name.. lol

Thank you all for the great help.

much more than I can simply type.

I truly appreciate all of you.

Are you talking about the two wire lead that goes to the ICM (ignition control module) that supplies power to it?

I think now you REALLY know how ridiculous the DEALER is with his $10K and those codes are related to the battery being disconnected

I am glad you figured it out, Welcome aboard again...

Glad to help out - once I saw the routing of the 2-wire harness that went over the corner of the cam cover, I had to ask if you left it disconnected by mistake. We would have found it eventually though. Now you need to figure out where the ground wire needs to attach so other electrical gremlins don't pop up. I would be very tempted to pay a visit to the "stealership" that was quoting $10,000 to fix the problem and rub their nose in it...

Are you talking about the two wire lead that goes to the ICM (ignition control module?) that supplies power to it?

Mike, The wire harness in question is a two wire harness that comes from under the intake manifold - it contains the purple "S" terminal wire that comes from the starter enable relay and the wire from the knock sensor. It needed to be unplugged in order to remove the cam cover since it passes over the front corner of the cam cover. It was left unplugged after reassembly.

glad you got the problem resolved and it's great to hear that do it yourselfing only caused you to forget to plug something in and not force you to pay 10k for some scam computer job from cadillac. from the looks of it you spent 10 hours diagnosing something that ended up being crazy simple but whatever.. you would have worked plenty more than 10 hours to pay for those repairs :)

live and learn, though, right?

did you ever get that ignition module grounded? the ground from the top of the #1 cylinder head does indeed go to the iggy module.. closest bolt to it, on top of the module before you torque that bolt. purrs like a kitten now but if that isn't grounded and a spark has no where to go if your landlords cables were to become internally damaged or you ran it with them disconnected the spark will go wherever it wants or can.. and it's got leads to the PCM and crank/cam.. i dunno what can happen in worst case scenarios but your landlord has a temper and it's probably worth throwing a bolt over the loose wire to keep from having to deal with him :)

welcome to the boards

It is in fact bolted down.

He is toying around with the idea of trading it in. I am -TRYING- to talk his wife out of a PT cruiser if they do trade it in... he still has his '00 Escalade... so I doubt he would let her get a neon wagon. lol

If I had been there the whole time. If I wasn't sick. those would have both cut that time down considerably I'm sure.

I'm just glad it was a der da der thing, and something serious. lol

Thanks for the warm reception
