95SevilleSLS
I had some leaking for sometime now on my 02 STS and I finally took it in just to have them pressure test to see where it's all coming from. I knew the water pump was leaking for sure, but I was a little suprises and irritated when I heard the coolant crossover is leaking also. How hard is it to do and am I able to drive it like this for a while without worrying about it completely giving way and coolant leaking everywhere? -Dusty- - 02 Seville STS, white diamond - 93 Sixty Special, Tan with vinyl top - 79 Coupe DeVille, Tan with Tan top - 06 GMC Sierra Z71, Black - 92 Silverado C1500, black and grey - 83 Chevy K10 Silverado, Black and Grey
JimD
If it was my car, I would at least try a dose of Bar's Leaks Golden Seal powder product #G12BP. Two tubes of this stuff might get you through to warmer weather. If two tubes don't do the job, try three or four tubes; you will not be doing any damage. Be sure to install the powder in the radiator hose (as opposed to the coolant reservoir). Changing the crossover gaskets is not a fun weekend. You practically have to dismantle the rear of the engine. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE !
Ranger
As Jim said, it is no small job.
BodybyFisher
I smelled coolant for 3 years. Finally replaced my crossover seals and the coolant smell went away. The seals crack and collapse. I have a thread someplace with photos. This is a hard job, its all labor and the dealer gets about $700 to $800 for it. The lower bolts are hard to get at and there is no room. I ended up taking out the front engine harness, relay center, throttle body, PCM, etc.. Big job. If they are only leaking under pressure as Jim mentioned the GM cooling supplement might help. 95SevilleSLS
Darn, I was hoping it wouldn't be real tough. The dealer said to fix the water pump and the cross over leak, it would be about $750 or so. To put the bar's leak or gm seal in the lower radiator hose I obviously have to drain a little coolant off. Do I just pour it right back in an start it up? -Dusty- - 02 Seville STS, white diamond - 93 Sixty Special, Tan with vinyl top - 79 Coupe DeVille, Tan with Tan top - 06 GMC Sierra Z71, Black - 92 Silverado C1500, black and grey - 83 Chevy K10 Silverado, Black and Grey

I have heard this put it in the lower hose before, that entails dropping all of the coolant.. Crush the tablets and remove the UPPER hose and put it in the upper hose. This way you lose less coolant. That crossover job is very hard. Let me give you some perspective. I have never heard KHE (Kevin) complain about anything, he did the timesert job with no complaints, he had some negative statements about the crossover... Its not easy, but knowing that up front, helps Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

I drove with it for 2+ years not realizing where the coolant smell was coming from. Fix the water pump, use the tablets and keep an eye on your coolant, I never lost too much coolant from those seals just smelled coolant. We can help you if you want to do this job, its a pretty interesting job to do but set aside a weekend. Many here including myself can give you tips, etc... The biggest PIA was getting the front electrical harness cleared out of the way. Doing this job you actually are able to take care of a lot of little stuff along the way, like the green hoses/clamps, TB gaskets, plenum, by pass hose, EGR ports, etc Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
95SevilleSLS
Thanks for helping me out. I'll do what you say and get the waterpump fixed and then go from there. I just put about 800 miles on and the coolant went down about 1/4 of an inch, if even that. So I'm not too worried. -Dusty- - 02 Seville STS, white diamond - 93 Sixty Special, Tan with vinyl top - 79 Coupe DeVille, Tan with Tan top - 06 GMC Sierra Z71, Black - 92 Silverado C1500, black and grey - 83 Chevy K10 Silverado, Black and Grey
