Cad1
Wondering if anyone here has ideas as to what might be the cause of the issue I am having. 1992 Deville, 210,000 miles, 4.9L. If the car is driven 20 miles, parked, return 20 minutes later and attempt to start, if it does start it has a really bad stumble, if able to keep it running about 5 miles down the road it runs like a top. I just changed the coolant temp sensor but that didn't help. Another strange thing but may be unrealted, I can only use ~10 gallons of gas before it stalls - could the fuel pump have dislogged? No codes. Thanks for any advance. Cad1 92 Deville w/210k miles
BodybyFisher
What made you change the coolant sensor Do you have any codes? Check the fuel pressure with a gage connected to the schrader valve on the fuel rail when this occurs This could be related to the ignition module in the distributor also, messing up when its hot We have also seen a bunch of 92s have problems with their PCM creating problems when it gets hot. Try a tap test on it to see if you can elicit any problems with it or solve the one you have when it happens Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
Ranger
Also check the FPR for a leak. That will affect hot starts.
Cad1
Thanks for the ideas. I'll try to figure it out, will post back with results. Cad1 92 Deville w/210k miles
Cad1
I changed the coolant temp sensor because I read that it could cause a stumble. Took the hose off the fuel pressure regulator, no leaks. Cad1 92 Deville w/210k miles

I recommend before messing up with distributor components (old brittle connectors etc.) rather replace the ECM. An inexpensive part and very easy and straight forward job. Get a reman. one from Advance for less than $100. The computers are under the glove box. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
Cad1
I replaced the Fuel Pressure Regulator, still have the stumble. Tried the computer tap test as well. I am tempted to replace the distributor cover. On this car is the coil inside the distributor cover? When it is difficult to start it seems real rich so maybe there is not enough spark. It has a knocking sound when trying to keep it running during hot starts but goes away once on open road - flooding? BodybyFisher
I think you are referring to the distributor cap. That should be replaced on major tune ups along with the rotor. Explain again when this stumble occurs Have you checked codes? The TPS can cause a stumble and contribute to the richness.
