A/C COMPRESSOR

:( My a/c compressor in my 94 Concours has been squealing for about a week. Sounds like the bearing was going. Well it would only squeal when the a/c was off or on Econ. Tonight it got worse and the a/c would not blow cold, then I started to smell burning belt. My a/c charge never got low enough to kick the compressor off but it would not blow cold. My question is if the compressor bearing goes will it cause the shaft seal to leak refrigerant? Is my compressor toast or rebuildable?

The lack of cooling could be a result of the belt slipping on the compressor pulley (burning belt smell). A failing bearing will generate heat, which could damage the compressor seal to some degree; it probably won't lose the refrigerant charge right away, but may not seal effectively under some conditions. You could use a shorter belt (~73.9 inches) to by-pass the compressor until you're able to make the repair.

Thanks Kevin.

I contacted Advance and they want $37 for the shorter belt, a regular belt was $30. I finally got my hands down to the compressor and it turns rough, like the bearings are gone, and it has a lot of play. How hard is it to convince an a/c repair shop to just replace the bearings in the compressor? Has anyone had this done while still in the car and how much should it cost?

I had a local a/c guy replace the bearings and it cost me $100 cash for the labour and the bearing. He didn't have to purge the system, he just took off the wheel and the splash guard and had it done in about 1 1/2 hours total.
