2-Cups
1997 SLS (4.6) Northstar What is the normal coolant level to be in the tank (plastic purge tank) when cold? Fluid level lines are marked "level when hot" (or something simular), but should the coolant level in the tank be the same when cold, or should any coolant be in the purge tank when the engine is cold? Ranger
The tank should be about half full when cold.

KHE
I think the full cold level is 2-1/2" below the filler neck. Kevin '93 Fleetwood Brougham '05 Deville '04 Deville 2013 Silverado Z71

The coolant level is higher when hot, due to thermal expansion of the coolant. If the surge tank is filled without leaving about 2 1/2" to 3" of air space, the pressure cap will be forced open as the coolant expands, and you will lose coolant. The siphon effect when this happens means you can easily lose 1/2 a gallon or so, very quickly. If you have a tank that you can see through, you should be able to see the coolant against the fill line. If not, you have to look into the surge tank to view the level; use a flashlight for easier viewing. Never try to open the surge tank cap on a warm engine. If the engine has been warmed up, wait at least 15 minutes before removing the pressure cap, and do it slowly. -George Drive'em like you own 'em. - ....................04 DTS............................
