Water Pump leaks

Attempted to take advantage of the warm weather here to start my new engine. Last thing to install before pressure-oiling the engine was anti-freeze. Just after beginning to install the 2nd gallon......I hear liquid hitting the concrete.....green liquid. After searching I discovered two leaks from the water-pump cover. One from a broken stud and the other from the lowest bolt directly below the pump pulley. All the fasteners were tight. Tightening that bolt below the pulley slowed it some, but it still drips. I suppose the smart thing to do is take the pump off and replace the gasket.......engine was a reman from GM and then stored for at least 10yrs so I suppose the gasket dried-out? Repairing the broken stud would be extremely difficult due to the frame being close. I'd have to buy a right-angle drill to try and drill out the broken stud and 'coil' it. I'm wondering if the sealant tabs would seal this particular leak? Any other ideas/solutions will be greatly appreciated! I'd really rather not take the pump off if at all possible. Thanks

They redesigned the water pump cover, you might be able to get the old cover seal after market but you won't be able to buy the seal from GM, you will need to by the redesigned cover with the new seal

This engine is a just a little younger than my '87 if the block-casting numbers mean anything. Probably a late '86. I don't know when GM remaned it though. The pump looks just like my '87. I'm gonna take the pump off the '87 and see what there is to see.....IT wasn't a leaker! lol I need to understand why it's leaking at the busted stud anyway.....top left side. It's strange that wasn't repaired. 'Something' was done because the block was buffed right at that point. I won't fool with coolant sealer other than the required tabs.

Do you know why & when the redesign was done in the 4100? Thanks

Oh I am sorry, my mistake, when you said water pump cover, I assumed it was a NS, they redesigned the NS water pump cover. My mistake

Upon further review: the broken stud is pressed into the front-cover, so it's not part of the block. The stud is somehow attached into a brass fitting and that brass fitting is pressed into the back of the cover. The fitting has a mushroom head on the block-side of the cover. I can't see how the stud was broken off since only about 1/8" is in the brass fitting. I suspect that brass fitting has to be damaged......

All better now. Removed WP....no gasket/no RTV, just metal to metal seal! I tapped the offending hole for a 1/4-20x1/4" screw without penetrating the brass fitting. Those 3 nuts on the studs are torqued at only 5lbs, so a gasket and the screw will hold the green in ok.
