Dave in Texas
''87 DeVille 4.1L I''m changing the gasket on my oil pan from an old oil-soaked cork to a FelPro PermaDry gasket. The FSM states in an.... ! IMPORTANT....Apply a 1/4" bead of RTV at the rear main bearing cap and front cover to block joints. I don''t understand what that means about blocking joints. What ''joints'' is the FSM referring to? Using this type gasket is the RTV needed at all? I''m hoping this gasket is the cure for oil-leaking I''ve been trying to heal for some time now. Hope someone can answer. Thank you! GM Reman 4.1 engine Dec '
rek
I would think the "front cover to block joints" means where the front cover meets the block, near the oil pan gasket. Same for the rear main.....where it meets the oil pan gasket. I've never worked on a 4.1 Cad. so I'm going on what I remember with a small block chevy. Usually, a dab of silicone was placed on the 4 ends of the two piece gasket, where it met the timing cover, and rear main ..... rek
Dave in Texas
Thanks for the reply. The first few times I read that statement in the FSM, I thought it must be referring to a multi-piece gasket and the 'block the joints' make sense. This PermaDry is a one piece with ribs, so there are no joints. Maybe it is referring to the two rotating masses on either end of the oil-pan: crankshaft-pulley on one end and flywheel on the other, maybe they somehow can cause an oil suction on the gasket ends?? lol A one-quarter inch bead is lotsa RTV....but then again, this is an Aluminum block........Thanks again, I'm still scraping the old cork/sealer off the block gasket surface, so I've got awhile to go still. TDK
Dave S, You may want to clean the surfaces with "Brake Cleaner", to remove all traces of oil - before the RTV goes on. Good Luck! Add power to leave problems behind. Most braking is just - poor planning.
Ranger
I think it is referring to any joints under the gasket. I recall having to do that where the head and the manifold meet when I did the head gaskets on my 4.1.
Dave in Texas
OK, got it figured out. Brake-cleaner shall be used. RTV bead across/'with' the rear-main cap joint and at the front cover cap joint. Only a few hours of fun left to go. Thanks for all the replys. I appreciate them.
