Dave in Texas
'87 Deville: Oil leaking from the rear-main area. Not oil-filter or it's adapter o-rings/cooler lines/valve cover gaskets. I'm asking if I can drop the pan to change the gasket. There is a oil-soaked cork gasket protruding from all around the pan. Bolts are tight. I don't know if a cork gasket was an OEM gasket back then. I want to try changing the gasket to a FelPro PermaDry. I also doubt the 1/4" of RTV at the rear-main bearing cap is there either. If this doesn't solve the leak, then I'll have to pay to get the transaxle removed to see if the leak is from the rear-main seal or from the block higher up. If anyone has any knowledge of this old set-up in the Deville, I'd sure appreciate the help. Thanks GM Reman 4.1 engine Dec '
Logan
I have a 2001. I think my rear seal is leaking some. Spots on the driveway...175 k car. I wont fix that. That said, how bad is it leaking? Motor oil is pretty cheap compared to putting a rear seal in. KHE
When I replaced the timing chain and gears on my '86 Park Avenue, I also replaced the oil pan gasket. The gasket was a silicone gasket - not a cork gasket. Keep in mynd this was a 3.8 L V-6 and not a 4.1 L V8 but I'd guess the OEM gaskets were of similar materials - it sounds like someone replaced the gasket on your car at some point. Seems like cork gaskets went out with $.35 gas and are used as a cheap 'fix' these days. GM Reman 4.1 engine Dec '
