Stereo replacement

Hi,

I have a -97 DeVille with the easier stereo (AM/FM radio with tape recorder) and are interrested into replacing this to a original Cadillac BOSE CD/tape/radio. However, when I plugged in the new BOSE stereo (antitheft) the display is black (cd and tape worked but no sound and the clock). Normally it should come up a message to enter the security code. What can I do to make this work?

In the 1997 model year (and probably most other GM and other cars since the 19980's) the radio is in the network. One of the things that the network does is check the VIN stored in the radio module, called the IRC (integrated radio chassis). If they don't match, the radio won't work. When we bought my wife's 1999 Pontiac Grand Am, the salesman told us this as a sales perk.

I don't know how to program the VIN into the IRC. A dealer may be able to do this. If you are familiar with a service manager, you might give him a call and ask him about that. The worst that can happen is to change the IRC within the radio for one that can be programmed, and the best that can happen is that they do it for free the next time you are in.

Logan may be able to chime in on the specifics, but you would need to take it to a Delco raadio shop to have the VIN programmed,it would be easier to just get an aftermarket cd player installed.

If I am not mistaken... the BOSE unit uses proprietary speakers with built in amps on the speakers. It will not work with regular speakers from a regular radio.

If you did not have Bose, you cannot install a BOSE without totally rewireing your car and adding BOSE AMPS/speakers - a nearly impossible task that's not worth is.

In addition if you had the base model non-bose, you cannot even install the upgraded am/fm,cd,cassette to the car without re-wireing the whole car with a active audio amplified (located behind the back seat) - again not worth it if you don't have the amp already.

Check to see if you have the AMP in your trunk, and if you do, you can add a non-bose head unit with a CD. If your original radio had a source button, check in the passenger side trunk for a 12 pin connector. If you have this, consider getting an ipod-2-car adapter for an ipod. you'll be happy with this.

The BOSE radio has NO amp within it. It relies on an amp in the trunk. Putting in a BOSE radio will NOT work in a non BOSE car. Sorry, you need another non BOSE radio.

Wish I had seen this thread sooner.

To start, the radio is not having sound because it does not come from the radio. It comes from the amp in the trunk(which you dont have)

Your stereo is not locked. Thefftloc didnt start on the cadillacs till 1998. It also says theftloc on the radio face.

I felt dumb. I was installing a factory 12 disc changer and I thought I needed a BOSE unit. So I bought one, Dealer told me it would need to be unlocked, charged me 40.00 to hook up the scantool and tell me iit is already unlocked and not vin encrypted. Dont make the same mistake I made.

If you wanted to add a 12 disc changer(if you dont have one already) there should be a plug in the trunk behind the carpet on the right side.

AS to upgrading to BOSE. way too much work. there are 5 amps total. 1 in each door and one in the trunk. Also has extra speakers including one in the center of the dash. Translation alot of time and money. the only way I would consider a BOSEswap is with a complete donor car.

I think my 96 Deville sounds great even though my 97 Seville has BOSE. They both sounds great. Hope this helps. I have a thread written up here somewhere
