Front brake rotor testing

Logan

Recommended Posts

I've noticed some factory balancing marks on some new GM rotors I've seen.

Do front rotors really need to be balanced? Well yes.

That being said. How much effect?

One site claims a 3/4 oz out of balance rotor can cause a 1st order vibration.

I have not gotten that far yet. What was interesting. Was the weight variation on aftermarket rotors.

I was figuring 15 lbs per rotor. It appears to be more.

I dont have the brand names available. But here is a quick weight chart of what I'm seeing online.

Standard brakes non heavy duty J55 brakes. 1998 and 2000 newer FWD Cadillac.

19.7

19.8

18.0

18.0

17.0

19.5

22.0

These are shipping weights. May not be correct. But that is pretty wide margin 17.0 to 22.0 lbs. 5 lbs difference? You would feel that in the car under sprung weight.

More to come.

I wonder, how many people know to match and balance new rotors before installation?
