Texas Jim
Took the DTS yesterday to have the wheels balanced before leaving on a 5000 mile road trip. Nice guy at Discount Tire said, "We will balance them but it may not help much on the front two... they are pretty much wore out. The back ones are fine." I looked at them and they were almost down to the wear bars. It is kinda odd, that if you look at them from an angle, like when they are actually ON THE CAR.. they don't look that worn at all. But if you look at them STRAIGHT ON... it is obvious. The front ones were really wore out. I NEVER LET MY TIRES GET THAT WORN. I can't believe I let them go this long. I have been known to point out other peoples tires and suggest that they need new ones... and then I do THIS. I was planning on replacing them when I got back, not now, but at least now I have two new ones. The other two still have quite a bit of tread on them. Will replace them in a few months. When they balanced them, one took 2 1/4 ounces of weight. The other one was 4 3/4. I had them turn the tire 180 degrees on the wheel, and it then took 2 ounces. I didn't have time to take them to get them Road Force balanced. If I have any vibration I will do that when I get back. Going to head out late this afternoon..I hope... and go to Glacier Natl Park on the border of Montana and Canada. Fairly long drive from Texas, up there and back. I may experiment with different fuel grades, and see what (if any) effects it has on mileage and power. There is a lot more difference in price between regular and premium now, than there used to be. Texas Jim
I hope you have another great trip. Try not to bounce it off the speed limiter. Bruce, Thanks for the well wishes. I found the reason that this speed limiter is DIFFERENT than the first DTS I had. There was a software update incorporated into the production run that changed it from 130 MPH to 124 MPH. It can't be changed back to 130. Darn it. Found the info here... Pretty interesting site. If this link shouldn't be here... delete it and references to it please. Don't want to get anyone in trouble. http://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web

JimD
For several years, Montana was the place to test your fuel cutoff speed and air the machine out for an hour or two. But I believe Montana has posted numerical Interstate speed limits again, correct? Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE !
Bruce Nunnally
I have found that you can test your speed limiter anywhere you can bait some other car to run ahead of you. Also if you follow Texas Jim you can sometimes check your speed limiter. Maybe Texas Jim would be in place for me to follow him from Shreveport to Terrell. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE !
Logan
I dont think Texas Jim will be happy with the Discount Tire units. I guess we'll have to wait for a report back. No way I would accept a tire with 2oz weight. 4oz weight? No way. Spin the tire 180? Sometimes that works on a steel wheel. On a machined trued alum 18' rim? Nothing will change. Same math, same tire, same wheel. You cannot get any better then a machined alum wheel. Bad tires. Just get this guy out the door.... One of the factory 2007 take off tires I have. LR. Has like, no weight on it at all. Very little weight. Maybe 1/3 of a oz. Even has a dummy weight. I thought, can this tire really be that good? Moved it to the front RF. Car now drives even better then before. Perfect. 175K car feels like it has 20 miles on it. I may take the now LR (old RF) tire in for experiment. Hunter road force. Test it first. But I will mark off all the weights before removing anything. So I can get back to OEM setting if needed. Intereseting. I have 1 tire. Has outer 'wheel side' stick on weights at noon, then 1 inner weight hammered on at 4 and one at 8. Very interesting set up. You at least need GM part # tires. I have been thru 2 set of wheels, 4 sets of tires. All had issues. These factory take offs are no comparison. They are perfect. Best the car has ever had. Feels like a new car. Been using the cruise a lot Just set it a 83 and then just EASE ALONG. Can't do anything else without donating my vacation money to them.

I actually HELPED them turn the tire on the wheel. Got my hands dirty. I always stand there and watch them when they are doing ANYTHING to MY CAR. They let me in the service bay as a part of doing business with me. I have been going to this same one for about 8 years They know I am eccentric and paranoid about my car. Have put about 1500 miles on them so far. 1420 miles yesterday alone. SLIGHT vibration at 60/70... not MUCH... real slight, but it is there. I very seldom drive at that speed, but they will get the pleasure of a return visit from me when I get back from vacation. I want it RIGHT. If they can't fix it, RIGHT... I will check with my dealer and see what I can find. There is also a place locally that sells dealer takeoffs May have to check with him also. I appreciate your input on the tires. Texas Jim
Also if you follow Texas Jim you can sometimes check your speed limiter. Not on THIS trip... at least so far. Cops are everywhere. Have had to just set the cruise about 8 mph over and just take it easy. I have used the cruise more on this trip than probably the previous year all put together. At least the speed limit in Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana is 75. Set the cruise at 83/84 and just cruise along, nice and slow and just look at the scenery. Bruce Nunnally
Yes, on my trip to Houston the troopers were parked every few miles along Interstate 45. I saw a couple of them already had customers. I was cruising at the speed limit, but I figured at least if I had a problem there was a trooper nearby. Not that they appeared to be there for my safety, but still. Bruce 2023 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing Follow me on: Twitter Instagram Youtube
Logan
Here is a picture of the best factory screened tire take off. Dummy weight. It has .35 stamped on it. It's like a weight clip with no weight on it. You can see the 1/2 oz stick-on weight in the back ground behind the ball joint. Thats it on this rim. Perfect tire. The factory 5 mile take offs saved this car. No 2 or 4 oz here.
