93 Deville code E 85 throttle valve not closing

OK, need some help from all you Caddy experts out there ...

I've been getting gasoline odors, especially on hot days when I have AC on in my 93 Caddy (4.9L MPFI), and when that happens, the car starts to sputter and stall, as if being flooded. Some friends are suggesting vapor lock.

Also, when it starts doing that, I disconnect the evap fuel canister (coffee can) and that seems to help.

I checked error codes and it gave me #E 85, which according to Haynes manual is "Throttle body servicing required (Throttle Valve not closing)."

So here's the question ... what does that mean and what should I think about replacing. Are the throttle body valves the two round plates that open and close upon acceleration/decelleration?

Is my problem even related to that?

I don't have enough $$$ for a mechanic, but I can do most work myself, so can anyone help?

Your throttle body is not closing, either from carbon build up in the throttle body or for mechanical reasons

Check the manual throttle linkage to be sure its not binding, that includes the pedal and cruise control cables.

Clean your throttle body throat and plate especially the rear of all carbon buildup. Preferrably use GM upper intake cleaner or make sure that you use O2 safe carb cleaner and a detail brush or tooth brush. It will take about 1/2 hour to do this job right. Clean where the plate contacts the throat.

While you're cleaning out the throttle body, also rod out the EGR tubes in the throttle body. With the throttle plate held open, you will see two 1/2" diameter tubes. They should not be closed off with carbon. Rod them out with a long, narrow screwdriver.

It could also be the closed throttle switch in the idle speed control motor. When in diagnostics, I believe the icon above the OFF button on the climate control panel is the state of the throttle closed switch on the ISC. Press on the accelerator and observe the climate control panel while in diagnostics - you should see one of the icons changing state when the throttle is pressed and then allowed to return to idle.

Could it be the FPR?

Thanx, folks!

I haven't cleaned it out yet, but upon inspection, there is a CRAPLOAD of black gooey buildup on the back sides of the plates and all throughout the interior beyond them ... smells very gasoline-ish.

Could this be why I'm smelling gas and stalling on hot days when the AC is on?

Also, here's something interesting ... I dropped a plastic cap when I was fooling with something else and it landed on the shelf of a plastic under-shield just beneath the lowest point of the serpentine belt. When I finally got it out of there, it had some black residue on it and it smelled like gas also.

I've checked the lines and can't find any gas leakage and the lines don't appear to go anyhwere near the belt anyway. Hmmmmm .....
