FINALLY... An Answer!

MIke D

Recommended Posts

Went back up to boston to my dads shop. He had a friend take a look at the car. Turns out that my missfire and popping has to do with a worn lobe on my cams for the #1 cyl. I had to get the b-codes in order to find out that my #1 was the culpret. some 58000 missfires on it. #3 had 3.... total! so we ran static compression and leak down and it was fine. It was not till we had a runing compression test did we find out that it"s not pulling in a full charge of air. it was off by about 5-10% from the other cylinders... So at least I know what it is... Now I don"t have the time nor the money to drop the engine to change these out so I will just live with it for now. Might do it after the wedding has been paid off... I heard something about priorities in the back of my head. should probably listen to it...

So thanks all for your help in trying to figure it out. If you got any questions go ahead and ask them... MD

I don't think you need to drop the engine to change the CAMs they are at the top of the engine. Good job

Mike,

I'm curious if he doesn't have a hydraulic tappet that isn't fully pumping up.

I'm not usually an advocate of oil additives, especially in N*s, but it would be worth a can of Rislone to see if improves or not.

I agree Britt, I have used MMO in the past with some success. My question to Mike is, do you have any ticking?, indicating a collapsed lifter? How was this determined that it is a CAM lobe and not something else?

Does the 1999 N* have roller tappets?

If it does... I would doubt a flat lobe on the cam.

If it DON'T have roller tappets... then maybe.

I would check (as BBF and Britt have said) to make sure it is not a lifter.

A lifter that is not pumping up fully will cause the same symtoms as a flat cam lobe.

Roller tappets began in 2000, it's the main reason I want a 2000+ for my next car..

Joe, do you have the compression results and can you post them? We have a few members that are complaining about this same symptom

I just wrote them to make sure but I believe the static compresstion was like 160 across them all then the running was 86 on the #1 and 92 on all the others..

I also thought you need to drop the motor because of the timing chains... Looks like the front bank in on top of the rear. that means i have to pull both chains, mark and reinsert...
