joeb
i had my heads off last summer and have had a slight miss at idle since than. i took off the intake today and i see the gasket surface is flat. there is no ridge left from the silicone portion. i think they are flat and am going to the parts store to see what new ones look like. i could really cheap out and put rtv on the old gaskets but who wants to take off the intake again? the caddy dealer had 1 gasket but napa can get the set for a few dollars less. they are closer to my house too. I am definately interested in whether this improves your miss. joeb
i would say the miss is still present. it shuddered a bit on first startup but seemed to smooth out. today it seemed to run the same. not real smooth at startup. maybe its ignition? 3yr old gm wires. i do not have delco double platinum plugs so that might be something to consider. maybe its fuel related? you do the headgaskets and really think for all that work it would run better. heck, maybe my timing is off. adjusting 4 cam sprockets is precise job but i am pretty sure i did it according to the manual. joeb
i read every thread that even mentions poor idle or similar issues. i have wondered how much work it would be to take off the timing cover and valve covers to recheck my timing marks. i need to pull the balancer and just prop up the valve covers to see the marks. man, that sounds like a lot of work. how come the balancer does not have a timing mark? or keyway? joeb
i forgot to mention i had a left over washer/bushing when i took off the intake. it fits perfectly onto the bolts that hold down the intake. imagine a washer/sleeve. about 1/4" high. i thought it might go between the gasket and manifold but i am thinking it might go on top of the plastic spacer for the center 4 bolts. any ideas? i think there were more at one time. maybe up to 4? In my experience, having a cam just one tooth off will be very apparent. Now, there could be such a thing as having an exhaust cam 1 tooth retarded, but I would think that situation would give poor performance & fuel economy. I would also wonder about piston valve interference in this engine if a cam were off a tooth. On building aircraft engines, I always triple check valve timing and have a second informed person do a check also. Take Care, Britt Britt
