MAYBE you didn't see this

In my first post to you in this thread, http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...c=18340&hl=

I said:

DO NOT USE A CHEAPO ALTERNATOR, USE AN AC DELCO PREFERABLY, we have seen problems with aftermarket alternators

Run your codes and see what its says, (x? terminal)

yea i saw the post but her ein dayton the place i got it from has always been known for selling real gm parts it was the place besides the dealer ive always gotten my electrical parts there but i guesss not anymore

They sell GM parts and you bought aftermarket? Its not your store that is a problem, it IS that if you bought an aftermarket alternator, THAT is a problem, there is some problem with the PCM communicating with the alternator in aftermarket alternators. You MUST either buy a new AC DELCO alternator or a certified rebuilt AC DELCO alternator. That is way too much work to take that risk, but look at it this way, R&Ring the alternator will be a LOT easier this time...

When we post a direct statement here like this "DO NOT USE A CHEAPO ALTERNATOR, USE AN AC DELCO PREFERABLY", it comes from experience, we have seen MANY members have the SAME problem you just did.. It will be easy return this one, and buy the AC Delco from the same place..

POST YOUR CODES PLEASE, it is important

You are in Dayton, Ohio?

thats what im saying it was supossed to a real gm part ac delco i took specail care to ask i think i just got screwed so anyway i just went and claered the codes. should i have done that after i replaced it anyway

OH...wow am I confused.. I misunderstood your writing.

So you do have an ac delco, you saw the box? Is this rebuilt or new?

Is the alternator out? Just start the car with it in, and see what the codes are now..

This thread is giving me flashbacks. I bought a number of aftermarket alternators only to find they only worked for a week or so. I went to PepBoys and two alternators were defective right out of the box. So, it's possible to buy a defective aftermarket alternator. Even if you have it checked in store before you buy it--this doesn't guaranty it will work for any appreciable time.

I finally bought a new one with a lifetime guaranty and it's still running. The remanufactured alternators can be poor quality because only defective parts are replaced and it's cleaned and then resold. Even if it's suppose to have been totally rebuilt, I wouldn't necessarily trust such representation. Remanufacturers are out to make a buck and rebuild with lowest costs possible--at least, based on my experience, it would appear this is the case.

Mac,

Talking about flashbacks....you and me both. :D

Buying aftermarket stuff. ESPECIALLY anything ELECTRONIC.

It just ain't worth the trouble and hassle.

I have done it countless times, down thru the years.... low on funds... need a part... aftermarket is cheaper than OEM.

Buy it... install it... take it back and exchange it when it don't work. Then install it again. :D

A few days, (or if I am lucky) a few weeks, "AFTER" the warranty runs out, I get the fun of doing it all over again. :D

Now I have bought TWO if the blankedy blank things...

It would have been cheaper to have bought the GOOD ONE in the beginning but I thought I was doing the right thing and trying to save a little money.

And thats not to mention all the hassle you go thru.

I have bought GOOD aftermarket electronic parts... but I can't remember, right now, exactly WHEN. :D

I, too had an AutoZone rebuilt alternator fail after about 3 days. When I took it back, the sales jerk asked what I was upset about. It's under warranty! :fighting0025:

After that little incident, I have not bought any AutoZone rebuilt parts, only Delco.

BTW I got my money back AND since I hadn't turned in a core, still had one to turn in for a Delco rebuild. :P

I actually have my own alternator rebuilt at a starter, generator and alternator rebuilder called Montrose in Babylon, NY. They independently of this board confirmed that if it is not rebuilt with the correct electronics, it has difficulty communicating with the PCM and the PCM issues a code. I think its an F terminal error if I recall. SO, you CAN in fact buy a quality rebuilt alternator if the rebuilder knows and cares what he is doing. The problem arises when the chains sell so called Lifetime Warranty parts, to me, those are dangerous. Their attitude is, you will either lose the receipt, sell the car or just swap it out when it goes. Many of them out of the box immediately throw a code.

I tell most people to buy an AC DELCO rebuilt or new because, you an count on the quality right out of the box. With the difficulty of R&R'ing this alternator who wants to do this job more than once.

I learned that buying rebuilt alternators is not the best idea, particularly if it's not an easy replacement job. If it's a matter of a 15-30 minute job then maybe take a chance. But if it's for a Northstar, might as well buy OEM or something that is brand new.

I once read that you should only buy "dumb" parts (filters, oil, coolant etc) from AZ. They give a lifetime warranty for a reason. THEY ARE CHEAP, and they are cheap for a reason. They are cheaply made.
