Caddyjag
Hello, I have a very weird problem with the headlights of my 98 Eldo. The problem is that for some reason my headlights and only my headlights will turn on by themselves. All light switches are in the off position. Then they sometimes turn on by themselves and drain my battery. I have tried to turn them off by playing with both the manual and automatic headlight switches, and when I'm able to turn them off and it seems like it will all be OK, the headlights will turn on by themselves in about 10 seconds or so. Has anyone had a similar problem? Can anyone provide any help?? Thanks Caddyjag
Ranger
I would venture a guess at a faulty switch.
runar
I would venture a guess at a faulty switch. HI caddyjag I have a 94 schematic. The 98 might be different. It is the headlight relay that turns on the headlights. Two things turn on the relay, the headlight switch and the twilight sentinel module.I am a retired industrial electrician, and I would rule out the headlight switch first and concentrate on the sentinel switch. That does not mean, that there could not be trouble in the main switch. I assume it is not the daylight running lights that is on.Not sure you guys in the US have them.I believe the headlight switch and the sentinel module is one unit. If that is the case,I would look to remove a wire marked 3B. That would take the sentinel part out of the circuit. If the problem goes awy , you know the sentinel unit is causing your problem. Good luck.Maybe somebody here with a 98 manual could check for the right wirenumber. Runar
WarrenJ
I've no experience that might help you, but I can give you a wiring DWG for your '98 Eldorado. Caddyjag
OK, guys here is the update. A guy from work suggested that the problem might have been the headlight relay. So before I played around with the switch module I decided to try putting in an identical relay from the relay compartment into the headlight relay connection. Well it turns out that the problem dissapeared. If I switched the relay for the old one, the problem would appear again. So I just went to the local auto parts store and bought a new relay, which at $16.99 it turned out to be a quite simple and relatively cheap fix. I installed the new relay and the problem is now gone. Thank you all for your suggestions. Caddyjag
