BodybyFisher
On the 92 my mechanic is making a bracket to repair the problem in lieu of replacing the entire cable. On the 98 I replaced the radiator 12 months ago and it has new approved coolant. The manual says the engine can lose all the coolant and be safely driven about 50 miles for repairs. That never happened and I am looking at about a $3000.00 mess. I have found out from several mechanics that this problem is common. Are you 100% sure you have a head gasket problem on the 98? How was it determined? Have you considered the cheapest method of repair by getting a scrap yard motor and having it installed? Yes I know that there is risk there also, but if you can get an engine for $500 and have it installed for $500..you might be able to at least sell it... Gyounker
When I first got the problem, I went to a radiator shop and they put something in the coolant that turned color showing carbon monoxide in the water. Then I started to get a little white smoke from exhaust when starting and now I have a milky oil showing water in the engine oil. I checked around and the only used motors cost $1900.00 here in Florida and the mechanic wants $600.00 to install. Last year I put a 4.9 in the 92 Eldorado and that motor cost $500.00 plus $700.00 to install. That motor now has only 64,000 original miles---and had a recent problem starting. BodybyFisher
$1900 is ridiculous. Is this an ETC? I could probably find an engine here and have it shipped cheaper. I shipped an engine to Amsterdam for $500 about 6 years ago. BodybyFisher
I just searched Florida, I see that the NS is very expensive down there, I am sure they are in demand. I did a search here in New York, and I found them from about $750 up, a few actually heard them run but for the most part they are in the $1000 to $1500 range, supply and demand at work, I guess.. I was comparing the NS to the 4.9, that I was getting for $500 to $600 Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
Gyounker
They must be in demand because many people need to replace them. Perhaps the 4.9 could be installed instead. Just got a call from a friend. The Manheim auction had their worst sale day ever and very few cars were sold. Also, Ford announced they will no longer make any SUV's. You can't install the 4.9 in your 98. I have been to a Manheim auction years ago when I was in college, I was a driver for the return trip.. I learned how to drive a stick that day.. from PA to Long Island. Ford can't aFORD to manufacture vehicles that will sit. With the economy, oil prices, election, outsourcing, airline, real estate and auto industry problems doesn't it make you wonder WTH congress is doing probing baseball?
