Use a large drain pan to collect the old fluid. Buy a new transmission pan gasket from GM. It's cheaper to buy the trans gasket kit vs. just the pan gasket - you will receive a new pan gasket, screens and screen seals. Once the pan is removed, drain the side cover by removing the drain plug that is only accessible once the bottom pan is removed.

Clean the old pan - inside and out. Also clean the magnet and the trans bolts. Clean any trans fluid from the bolt holes. Use a putty knife to clean any gasket material that has bonded to the trans case or the pan as well as any dirt from the side of the trans case. Lube the screen seals with trans fluid and re-install.

You need an in-lb torque wrench for reassembly. Be sure to follow the bolt torque sequence in the shop manual/in the kit directions as there is a beginning, intermediate, and final torque value. I use a marking pen to number the torque sequence near the bolt holes on the pan - that makes it much easier to follow the torque sequence while under the car. The markings are removed upon completion with lacquer thinner.

thanks... what is the best way to make sure you get all the old fluid out... my mechanic is telling me that by dropping the pan is only gonna get like 60% of the fluid out

That's all that is needed to be removed. You could disconnect the return line from the radiator and connect some clear tubing to the radiator trans cooler outlet and place it in a bucket and idle the engine while adding new fluid. When bright red fluid exits the tubing, then drop and drain the pan as outlined in my earlier post. That seems like overkill though.

You know Dana, if you are NOT going to listen to us, PLEASE stop posting.

WE TOLD you NOT to have your transmission FLUSHED/or a FLUID TRANSFER DIDN'T WE?

and THEN you come back with THIS???? "my mechanic is telling me that by dropping the pan is only gonna get like 60% of the fluid out"

YOUR MECHANIC?, YOUR MECHANIC is SELLING A FAST SERVICE.

Please, it is because of people like you that I am QUITTING this board at 12,000 POSTS...

It has been said by others here including me, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME, FIND A REPUTIBLE SHOP and GET IT REBUILT, and DON'T USE GENERAL SALES IN WEST CHESTER, that offer is off the table. YOU NEED TO DROP THE PAN TO SEE WTF IS IN IT LIKE CLUTCH MATERIAL, ETC. IF A FLUSH SHOP DOES NOT WANT TO FLUSH YOUR TRANNY ITS TOAST, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY, FIND A SHOP.

By the way, did I tell you yesterday to KEEP ALL RELATED POSTS TOGETHER? You started about 6 transmission threads, including THIS ONE after I said to keep them together. You obviously don't care to adhear to our requests NOR do you listen to us about NOT flushing/exchanging the fluid, why are you here?

You know when I went to bed last night I felt badly that I blasted you. So I decided to go back and SEE what it is about your threads that is disturbing.

First, when you keep your threads together they are easy to follow, not only me but STSS and Fivepointohman comments about your multiple threads, IT GETS CONFUSING.

Secondly, when we say DRAIN AND REFILL, change the filters, that IS what we mean, YOU even stated you UNDERSTOOD, that FLUSHING was BAD.

Third, you are young, inexperienced and not mechanically inclined. These are very complicated cars, you need an honest mechanic, this is NOT the kind of car you learn on

Here is a history of YOUR THREADS on the TRANSMISSION ISSUE you are having

Jerk feeling

http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...c=17609&hl=

See your post #15, you say, my trans fluid smells burnt.. i will take it tomorrow to get the trans fluid changed

In Post #16, on May 2, STSS said, When you take it to get it changed, I dont think you want to let them flush the system. I think you just want it to be drained and refilled. Am I correct?

In Post #17, on May 2, YOU SAID, THATS CORECT! sorry bout the caps... but yea i read in another post that tran flush is the worst thing to get... so imma hve them drop the pan clean the screen and change the filter...

In Post #26, on May 2, I said this, This is really hard to say what it is, when they drop the pan, see if there is any sediment. DO take it to a reputible shop and DO NOT let them know that you might be having any problems. STAY AWAY from AAMCO at all cost, you WILL have a problem. Change the fluid and filters and see what you get, you are not getting any codes, if you DID have a tranny problem you would be getting codes, trust me

Trans Fluid Dranin, whats the proper method??

http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...c=17662&hl=

Keep in mind that in the Jerk Feeling, on May 2, you said this, THATS CORECT! sorry bout the caps... but yea i read in another post that tran flush is the worst thing to get... so imma hve them drop the pan clean the screen and change the filter...

In Post #2, KHE gave you the ENTIRE procedure

In Post #3, you said, thanks... what is the best way to make sure you get all the old fluid out... my mechanic is telling me that by dropping the pan is only gonna get like 60% of the fluid out

After all of our comments, after all of you responses that YOU appear to know what is going on, you come back with that statement.

We could tell you how to flush the fluid out by disconnecting the cooler line and letting the fluid be pumped out, but YOU are too much of a novice at this point to do a procedure like that from all of your other responses. Furthermore, what is MOST important at this point is that you DROP THE MFing pan and see what sediment is in it, if you see CLUTCH MATERIAL or a lot of SLUDGE get it rebuilt, THAT is WHY we said to DROP YOUR PAN, CHANGE THE SCREENS,….

Looking this over in detail, while I felt badly last night, I really shouldn't have felt badly.

Disconnecting the trans cooler line to purge the old fluid is not required but some do it and it won't hurt anything. The factory shop manual only recommends a drain and refill and a "Transmission Flush" will never appear in the factory shop manuals for good reason - it is not recommended. The only place flushing is mentioned in the shop manual is to flush the transmission cooler lines in the radiator when the trans is serviced. Totally different from the transmission flush machines at repair shops.

If the trans. fluid is burned, then changing the fluid is not going to fix the problem. Pull the trans fluid dipstick and smell it - does it have a burned popcorn smell? If so, you are going to need to see a transmission shop.

Thanks Jonah, but after so many posts it gets tiring, tedious, repetitive and challenging to have the patience to deal with know it alls and knuckleheads. In addition, I am going in a different direction with my life and need to focus. I will be here incognito but only for my own problems. As always the search function is very helpful and all of the other talented, experienced and knowledgable members will still be here.
