strange chirping noise from pulley's

Recommended Posts

I have a 98 deville with 112k miles on it, have not changed any belts on it at all. I'm also hearing a strange, well it sounds like a chirping sound and seems to get faster as I step on the gas. It's coming from where all the pulley's are and I think that one of the pulley's might be a little loose cuase when the car is on I can see the pulley to the left of the a/c comp. wobbling. Could that pulley be cuasing that noise or is it the belts?

Are you speaking about the crank pulley wobbling (#5)? Mine wobbles a little, but I don't think that is your chirping. At your mileage, the tensioner pulley, idler pulley could need replacing. You can remove the serp belt, and turn each component and feel for roughness or looseness or dry bearings. Sometimes the tensioner binds or looses its ability to apply tension to the belt and it chirps. How is your AC?, the pulley hub bearing tends to go. When does it chirp, constantly or when the ac engages or on acceleration?

Here is a photo of the accessories and wheels on that side of the engine

Not sure how the pully is on that car (solid metal etc), but I have seen cars where there is rubber on the harmonic balancer, like between the metal part where the belt rides and the mounting, and over time it starts to seperate and creates chirping noises as it turns etc.... just something to keep in mind.

By the way, one other possibility, I have seen the AC clutch chirp on engagement also. The guru used to use a length of 3/4" hose as a listening device, put one end at your ear and listen to the components with it, BE CAREFUL not to get tangled up with the serp belt.

I've also heard that a socket extension works as well. Put your ear to the hollow end and the other end against what you want to listen to. Not sure which works better.

WARNING: I'm a total car newbie, don't be surprised if I ask a stupid question! Just trying to learn.

Cheers!

This is true also, my Dad showed me that when I was a kid. Putting the extension near moving parts can be dangerous however, and I like the guru's method with the hose, which can also be dangerous if you are not careful. As an example, if you wanted to listen to your alternator, getting the hose down there is tricky..

One thing that can chirp is the belt itself - one time I was totally convinced that I had a faulty

power steering pump - bought a new one and changed it - same sound.

Then I replaced the serpentine belt and the chirping was gone. The chirping belt did not have

the cloth look on the ribbed surface.

This is true and really the first thing that should be looked at, a dry, shiny, cracked belt can definately cause problems.

Changed belt and chirping gone....Payed $45 for a Gates belt at O'rielly's which I thought was too expensive so I look on Rockauto.com and ordered one for $32......Or should I have gone with a Ac Delco belt?
