Recommended Posts

I bought a pontiac some time ago, i noticed that the right rear brake tends to grab and sink when i press the brakes. i know this is a cadillac forum but i know i can get more help from you guys than the pontiac forum(they suck). what should i check? what could be causing this problem

"right rear brake tends to grab and sink when i press the brakes...." I can understand the "grab" part but cannot the "sink" one. Could you please clarify that?

If these are drum brakes, the brake shoes might be contaminated. It could also be sticking brake shoes or slave cylinder pistons. If the rears are disk brakes, it could be sticking caliper pistons, or heavy grease or brake fluid contamination.

If they are drum brakes, a quick brake job -- new brake shoes, a light smoothing and leveling cut on the brake drums, and rebuilt slave cylinders -- should fix it right up. If they are disk brakes, fix the contamination first, or if the calipers are just stuck, then replace the pads and rebuild the calipers.

With either type of brakes, do both sides so that your braking is symmetrical when you are done.

Have you pulled your drums to have a look? Could be metal to metal, could be mal-adjusted, the linings contaminated with something like Jim noted or moisture in the fluid. The sinking feeling is due to the suspension tension being released when you let off the brake, something is grabbing and winding up the suspension.

i go back on what i said earlier, i do feel it sink. i decided to take a look back there and they're brake drums. i got in my car and as i pulled out of the parking space i decided to brake and when i did the rear sunk down and the brakes started grabbing again. and then as i pulled of it sounded like it was stuck in that position and i heard a sort of rustling metal sound. so should i bleed the brakes? and what can i do about the suspension?
