Delta
Hello all, My remote for the 96 SLS was working intermittently, at best. Changed battery, no change. Was thinking of getting a new remote, but decided to take apart the remote. Popped it apart, and removed the rubber key pad from the circuit board and noticed that everything inside was covered with some sort of oily substance. I figured what the hell, and cleaned it completely with alcohol, underside of the rubber keyboard as well as the circuit board that the keyboard connects to. I figured, what the hell, it wasn't working anyway. Well, after completely cleaning it, put the battery back in and wallllahh! I now can get about 35 feet out of the remote effortlessly. I dont know if the factory put some sort of grease in there or something, but it wasn't working. Of course, it'll probably last a week or so, and disintegrate. I also pulled apart remote 2, and the same thing, even more! Does anyone know if the factory treats there remotes with something. Because what ever it was, it made the remotes worse, in my opinion. BodybyFisher
Not sure, I have taken mine apart also. The last time I did, mine was also wet inside with an oily substance, but it might have been just dampness from the rain or something. MOST of the time, I find a loose part on the circuit board that need to be soldered back in place because of dropping my keys on the ground. Cleaning it as you say, almost always improves its function Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

Pockets, purses, drawers, pools, commodes (or worse); an endless list of possibilities. Clean is good. And a trip through a dish washer cycle every year or two is not a bad thing. Jim Drive your car. Delta
Hehe, I agree clean is good, but the dishwasher? Logan
No grease is applied to the contact pads. They should be clean and dry. Taking apart the remote and cleaning the contact pads and board is step #1 for fixing a remote. Where does it come from? 12 years of French Fries, hamburgers, car washes? Dont know. It's all over my wife's cell phone. Add cosmetics. Now try this trick. Get as far away from the car where the remote will still work, then try holding it against your chin during unlock. Start backing up...I can triple the distance of my remote doing this.. Maybe it's that aura I have.... WarrenJ
Rinse the rubber keypad membrane under warm water ONLY and gently pat dry. Harsh treatment can remove the conductive coating on the underside of the keypad. An easy way to repair a keypad that has lost its conductive coating is to use the tiniest drop of Crazy Glue to attach a 1/8" square of cigarette pack foil to the underside of the "bad" key (foil side away from the keypad). No waiting. You can reassemble and use immediately. DO NOT use household aluminum foil. It's too hard and will abrade the printed circuit board. Alcohol is perfectly safe to use on the P.C. Board. A pencil eraser can get the job done also. Regards, Warren P.S. Yes. Of course it works on your TV remotes. There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises
BodybyFisher
Thanks for that info Warren, my trunk button doesn't work. I was going to buy a new one because of it. I was wondering how I was going to renew theconductive coating. I am going to the junk yard today for a few things (engine mount and a few electrical connectors) Ill check to see if they have any used fobs..
