ckraine
I have the same problem with my 97 SLS. It appears to be a spring failure.
tmpafford
I had my 97 in the shop for other repairs and I was quoted $245 to fix it. I think it looks nice broken.
KHE
When I bought my '96 SLS, the ashtray would not stay closed. The dealer fixed it along with some other minor issues. They told me that most of the time, a spring comes off and it is a very easy fix. Julio
I have the same problem, the assembly is 100 from the dealer, to get to it on my eldorado you have to remove the shifter button and center console shift indicator. I looked at the latching mechinism on the dealer part it is plastic it has a spring and a plastic tab that holds it shut. I am thinking it is the plastic tab has broken from some one pulling up on it rather than pushing it and letting the latch release on its own.
