PAUL T
I would check the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR). Pull the vacuum hose off it and turn key on (engine off) and check for gas. If there is gas then replace the FPR. Check the archives there are plenty of posts on this.

If you put your foot on the gas just a little bit when it doesnt start, and with doing that it starts, then the IAC is just sticking. Shouldnt be a big deal, clean and or replace and you should be ok.

BodybyFisher
Definately sounds like a leaky FPR However, you have a 97, make sure that your FUEL RAIL was replaced, while the FPR will cause flooding, I want to make sure your rail was replaced, it should be stainless steel NOT plastic. I think your year was included in the recall. (I am concerned with the fuel smell here, and to be sure its not the fuel rail) Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
