problems ( Overheat and High Idle )

Recommended Posts

Ok, finally put the car back on the road yesterday, put 40 Miles on it ran great! Today I decied to buy those GM / Cadillac Coolant Sealing Pellets that I was told is recomended to run in the Northstar Motors. Well, After putting 5 pellets in which is what the package said, The car now heats up to the last white line and is hard to get down at 12 oclock or less. I just installed a 170 degree thermostat ( 10 degrees cooler from stock ) last week and it ran cool and excellent, I also flushed out the antifreeze. Now it Heats up, Is it the pellets or something else?

Now the idle, I Have to constantly replace the IAC solenoids on this car. This one lasted about 200 miles before it begins to stick and randomly run high etc. What gives? Bad ECM or is it faulty crap parts? I am buying them from napa. No codes from it ( yet ) but I am sure it will, I hate coming to a light and having the car race at a dead stop. Not good for this car at all. i was thinking a faulty ground possbibly to the engine causing the IAC to get fried everytime? Car has a new Mass Air, and a New TPS as well. Any help would be great as I am driving this car to SC next week and dont want any issues.. Let me know.. Thanks in advance everyone!

Update...... I opened the radiator overflow cap, and It was covered in the gunk from those pellets. It seemed to have created a Seal from the housing and the seal on the cap itself, possibly clogging the pressure release? I just flushed out the bottle and the radiator again, and refilled. Now to test drive it again!

You might have blocked the purge line with it, check the purge line. Flush out the bottle, remove the hoses from it to be sure water flows out of those locations.

It gets crushed in placed in the upper hose, it was once said that it should go in the lower hose but I think you loose less coolant by putting it into the upper hose.

Well, I flushed out the system and refilled with Dex-cool. The bottle was caked with it. After the flush and fill, ran the car around and the temp went back to normal without any overheating. The high idle stayed good too. I am not sure if that is going to start going bad again, but for now it's ok.

Clean the TB. That may help your idle problem.

Definately, I have lapses of high idle and have cleaned the TB throat and throttle plate especially the rear and edges and it goes away.

I cleaned the Throttle body today, took it right off and cleaned it completely out which I then cleaned out the coolant passages as well. seemed pretty clean as i took it off a little over a year ago to do the same.. New gasket seems to be running ok for now.

You know its odd, I took mine off in August and POLISHED my TB with my dremel, it shined. Twice since then, I have had a high idle condition, and I scratch my head wondering why, as there is no way that deposits should have built up since August. These high idle conditions usually occur after long highway runs for me.

I will take a look at my TB throat and plate this week and see if I have any build up. Maybe our IAC's are hanging up. Here is a photo of my TB after cleaning.

I agree, After long drives is when it usual hangs up. I have no idea why. Does your TB get blazing hot after a long run? It's wierd cause the reason the car has a plastic Intake manifold is to keep heat away from the fuel charge and allow the heads to travel around. they put coolant passages in the TB to warm the incoming charge of air and also loosen deposits.. To me that is totally stupid! i Bypassed that entire cooling path on my 5.0L Mustang GT and saw great power gains! Maybe I will do the same to the cadillac. I dont drive the car in the winter so I could care less about heating the incoming air plus the air will be more dense meaning more HP and Mileage!

I believe that is to stop icing in the winter as you note. I also have heard of by passing the TB coolant flow, and I am going to consider that in the summer months. Who knows maybe the IAC is getting overheated and not functioning right when its really hot from a long ride

Well today I drove the car a little bit and my idle and temp started to act up just a bit. As far as the idle is concerned, It went up a little bit while I was on my travels, then I had to shut the car off and on and it immediatly settled to normal, however I was watching the tach and at idle and off the gas it was hunting around to try and figure out where it belonged. As for the temp, it primarily stayed right before 12 oclock position, until I stopped at a red light for a while, then it went past 12 oclock and took a while to get down. To combat that I did something as sort of a test to see why it's getting hot. I pit a toggle switch to one of the fans to be able to manually turn it on when I am at a dead stop to see if it climbs or stays normal. I'll have more details on that as I drive along. But My question is, what are the simptoms of a bad water pump? It is quiet, and doesnt leak. But i was thinking maybe at idle it doesnt pump enough water thought the system. Also how hot is too hot on this car?
