nice car...turning to junk

i drive a 93 deville, 4.9 fwd. and i have a bunch of problems with it. i've been driving it about 350 miles a week so i havnt had any time to fix the problems. but...now that the weather is broken and i'm not driving as much, i can start taking a look at things. my change oil soon light will NOT reset. I follow what the manual says to do and it definately doesn't work. the light just goes on periodically. ive been dealing with that for a while now. also, my fuel data center thing doesnt work right. it jumps around from avg mpg to instant to fuel used, to distance to empty, back and forth, kinda randomly. it also doesnt respond when i push the buttons. my service vehicle soon and service engine soon lights turn on and off here and there as well. so i am thinking those problems are linked. i ran the codes...using the fuel data center read out and it says (in this order): 888, F, F31, F32, FF, F31, F32, .7.0, (push the outside temp button) F.8.0.

It never says anything about history or anything else like that.

I know i need to change my power steering rack out because when i turn right, the wheel stays cocked about a quarter turn to the right when i am going straight. if i turn to the left the wheel straightens out.

Now, to add insult to injury, my anti-lock light came on this week. The fluid is full and I think the pads are good. Sometimes the anti-lock brakes kick in when they shouldnt if i am on the brakes.

This car is in really good cosmetic condition and the engine runs like a top (except for the electrical junk). Since it is in good shape i dont want to see it turn into a heap so i want to take care of this stuff asap.

ANY help with these problems would be great! Thanks!

you sure its the rack? it might be the pivot bearings on the top of the struts.

I would check the battery connections. If the battery is at least 5yrs old I would suggest a replacement or have it load tested. A battery going bad will cause all kinds of electrical problems. Pull the fuse for the ABS/TC and examine it. You're probably right about needing a new steering rack but you may still have life in it. When turning on on and off ramps do the front wheels feel like they are fighting each other? Do you notice a quivering or stuttering in the steering wheel while going around turns? If so then it sounds like one or both front strut mount bearing plates are shot. Strut mount bearing plates are about $15 each.

I was thinking the exact same thing last night.

this has had the electrical problems for a while now. the battery in the car is fairly new as well.

i'll start by replacing the strut mount bearing plates because they are 70 bux cheaper than the rack. if that doesnt work, i'll just replace the whole rack.

the anti-lock brake light hasnt gone on today at all but the brakes are acting up still.

oh! i also just remembered that my service SSS light is on.

any ideas about the electrical stuff?

thanks!

I would still take a closer look at the battery and its connections. Corrosion builds up under the rubber and if the connections are not tight all kinds of electrical problems can occur. I would also take a look at the connections to your BCM & PCM there may be a short somewhere between the two.

Check the price of the strut mounts mine were $80 per side from gmotors.com

The SSS light has to do with the electronic suspension. If the car still rides OK, there is a kit to buy from GM that will disable that feature - see the how-to section on this board for additional information on the kit.

does anyone know what those "f" codes mean? or why the fuel stuff acts all crazy?

Go to my post above and check the things I recommended.

F31 - Display Panels to BCM Data Problem - probably a short or loose ground from the BCM to the panels affected, or a bad BCM.

F32 - PCM-BCM Data Problem - Probably a short or loose ground to the BCM and/or PCM, faulty connections, or bad BCM or PCM.

A loose or corroded battery connection will cause this also, PLEASE CHECK YOUR BATTERY CONNECTIONS. I found a short in my wiring harness on my 92 Deville around the frame on the passenger side below the radiator. The wire had worked its way out of the wire loom and rubbed the frame. Check the easy stuff first. Battery connections then the PCM & BCM connections.

Sounds like one or more of the buttons is stuck. This happened to me every once in a while on my 1993 Deville, too, esp when it was cold. If a button isn't stuck, it might be shorted.

Hello,

I was reading your post and I have the same rxact model as you.

I also share the same exact problem as you do.

I changed the ECM and still have the same problems.

I was wondering if you got yours fixed and if you did can you tell me how you did it.

I would appreciate it very much.
